my Andrews steam cleaner in work would take the dye out of the brickwork bund around the fuel tanks getting the bloody moss off it .... did a hell of a job of getting the yard clean though. one pass was enough

I know there's just gravel left on the concrete slab on the farm where the hypocloride foot dip used to be

reclaimed me patch today .....

and stuck these out the way for now

nip out and get some hardboard sheets tomorrow and get the pile sheeted down
then I can get on with a few other jobs

bitty day
looked at disco as i went by and it has a flat tyre ... odd - was OK yesterday ... go to blow it up and see why, only to discover the valve stem split ... unusual fault

so wrestled the wheel off and onto the bench to further wrestle a new stem into the rim

re-inflated and back on the hub .. don't forget the ......
who remembers these people have had that tin longer than I care to remember ......
would not care to pay for the 10kg tub of 'slip that that tin got filled from, back then and certainly not today
bit of grass massacring with the Dane ate into an hour or so of the day, as did emptying those three barrows of tish I was debating the other evening ... took the long walk in the end ..... three times .... so for a rest and as it looked like it was gonna stay dry, I got the new trailer bottom out and gave it a few coats

and that was the underside and edges sealed ..... fence paint pots make good air tight containers for decanting 25l cans into and as the original contents are water based, wash out a treat
so while that dried again and as the pot was 'out' ......

.. spare hour saw 98% of the side covered ... top board is a job for again, when I can be bothered to 'cut in' under the sheets

tea was a pleasant interlude .. followed by a couple of coats of Ali, to seal the load side of the bed, before it got stashed for the night to harden off

she did manage to hang a bucket on later, have a scrat and drop it back off, where she got it from ...... give her some time, somewhere to chuck some stuff about and she'd get the hang of it alright ......
having parked it back in its usual spot, in a quite respectable manner, she said " I like that -- that's mine " .... Much like the Thwaites is her's .... in a straight flat line, 'til the going gets interesting ... then it's " It's your dumper, you do it "

had a little hour on the Harrison yesterday ......

knocking out some stub axles for these, that i've had cwched for maaaaaaaaaaaany years .. bought 'em at a sale of a caravan manufacturers that went bust a very long time ago ... together with about 100 HD/industrial 5.00 x 8s, that have made all sorts over the years -- some on that single bottle trolley I put up a few days ago and several other O2 /DA cutting trolleys, plus various other uses, apart from many other pairs I sold.
only had one pair of these though

bit of 40 x 40 x 4mm SHS .. nice fit and very stiff ......
and been busy with the rest of it today ......

creating this and modifying what it's getting fitted to .....

picked the yellow bit up several weeks ago and been giving some thought as to how best to make it multi purpose

think this fits the bill

very finely balanced between loaded and a full tip position -- took a bit of working out, but got it just right ..... got some other ideas for the chassis too ...

just need to knock up a drop leg for it, keep the coupling out of the tish ...... and some alternate bodies ..... will go nicely behind our lil Westwood traccy thing ......

....................... and you all know what comes next

second coat tomorrow ....... got drizzled on tonight, just as I got started

alright over a short distance Stu, but the lil' Westwood's a better proposition for any distance trekking. I've had it 30 odd years and had it on the bench a while back, going through any tranny issues - re-bushed the final drive shafts and sorted the brakes, etc. It'll be fine for a few more years yet
Biggest hassle with it is the local insect life likes setting up home in the points dept. ..... bloody spiders are a PITA in the mag. and being a Briggs lump, needs the least of excuses, not to behave/perform
a hitch on lil' Jake'd certainly be a useful addition though

like bloody October here this morning .... just had me hamster juice and am now gonna put on a couple of shirts, sweat shirt and me jeans and maybe a fleece, to venture out ...... August be ****ed ..... shorts and a tee shirt were deffo inadequate at eight o'clock, when I fed the fish

hell no .... cheaper to use the p38 ..... it'll do the minimum of tracking about necessary .... no point in wearing the poor lil bugger out ...... it's gonna take a lot more than a couple of holes to get a ball on there in the right place/height ..... a well known forum member has also advised against it as an idea ... has a tendency to knacker the idlers by all accounts although as I said to him - there'd be virtually zero nose weight on the drawbar, the way I have it set up .... could well see it being advantageous to have on the odd occasion though ... plus as said I also have the lil' garden traccy in the shape of the Mountfield, which I was sure was a Westwood, 'til i looked this evening, but damned near the same things anyway !

Looked 'cos I had a tyre to change on it ... N/S/R was flatter than flat and decided that it was beyond its use by date, for keeping wind in a tubeless rim
had a couple sat about off the Dane, when I fitted the herring bones to that and they were a lot better than what was on the Mounty ...... getting the rim off the back end is a doddle - circlip and a key driving it ..... getting the tyre off the bead and then off the rim is another matter

it had to have it though

a good scrape off, wire brush and a touch up with a file here and there and it was ready for its replacement ........ plenty of tyre soap is the secret to these lil' sods ..... and a 4ft mounting bar ........ also helps having it bolted to close on a tonne of bench, which ain't moving with just lil' old me hauling on it

inflated and holding wind nicely, it all went back on, after the tyre'd had a swim in the tank in search of air bubbles .. none found ... all ready for a shed re-juggle tomorrow, so's I can get much easier access to it, as needed. Tucked in out the way ATM .... that's gonna change .... battery on charge for the night ...... see if the little sod'll start in the morning?

All grass massacred again today .... keeping on top of it saves a lorratidying

Countax tidies as it goes ... on the lawn ..... gonna have to find me a tow along sweeper for this lot

struck lucky with that lil' skip Dyl ..... don't see 'em that size very often and more than enough in that, behind a little tractor mower --- it's got a disc brake on the tranny, but it ain't a particularly big un' new pads fitted last year

tuesday got shot to s**t with 90% of it being taken up entertaining Clara - unexpectedly ... 'til late afternoon when i dragged the lil' Mountfield out, full of expectations for it to start - NOT .... I wasn't disappointed ..... pull it to bits ....

remarkably - no spiders/web on the points ..... just a very furry set .... quick clean ... reassemble and away it went ...... after I'd sorted the fuel filter that'd let go and spewed its guts all over the floor

little bit of tinkering, to get it ticking over smoothly and it was whizzing around the patch quite happily .... sized up the 'skip' trailer .... ball hitch on the back of the Mounty is set at std 16" ctr .... and realistically a bit high for said 'skip' so sussed an additional position for it and have sorted a suitable candidate plate to get attached, when I get the existing one off to attach it to (easier on the bench, than grovelling on the floor, for the sake of a couple of bolts)

Bit late after tea to go dragging me gear oot for the hitch so thought i'd have a look at the Harrison to see WTF it was chattering the other day. having had a close examination, it was coming apart ....

someone'd been pissing with it and half the cross slide guide bolts were loose-ish ... needed investigation ... got the compound slide and tool post off and then the guides off and cleaned up, by which time it was nine o'clock and the boss had come to see if I was still upright and why hadn't I made her mid evening cup o' tea? ..... so that was the end of that for the day.
Wednesday morning got Clara-ed for a couple of hours (Vicki's at 38 weeks and about to burst, so needs all the help she can get ATM) I wish i had a quarter of Clara's energy !!
So ...... later in the day, I resumed where i'd left off ....

I'd eventually dismantled enough of it to get the cross slide off by half two ... most have a cast lug on their underside carrying the lead screw nut ... not this one , But I did eventually suss it and got it off to find a horror story

that just got worse, the harder I looked and deeper I got ..... this is just Boris Karloff territory .....

yes it's as bad as it looks ..... I've cleaned it as best I can -- which took soooome time !! and every thing else got the same treatment ....

the nut is actually in a decent state, but this needs a new screw (and nut-to be sure) ..... hopefully Harrisons'll be able to supply and hopefully at a decent figure, otherwise I have a plan B
got what was left of the screw decent and cleaned ... will give backlash, but is usable - sort of - for now ...

set up the slider mounts and their back up screws ..... got the compound cleaned, together with the tool post and back in place

the backlash is tolerable/workable, as long as you account for it .... it'd do to create plan B if I have to

oh and someone's been in here before as the screw has been mod.ed at both ends ..... and will be Druidised too if they can't come up with a new screw .... will make some calls tomorrow.

If you can't get replacement parts have you considered one of the electronic dro's available on eBay.
If you are used to working off the dials they take a bit of getting used to but they mean that any backlash won't affect your calculations as you can work off the actual movement on the bed.
My old man has fitted them to several 9f his lathes and mills to get better accuracy also they can be set to imperial or metric and he still works in old money so he finds it easier and quicker to use them on metric lathes and it's easier to read for him without his glasses on

I have a DRO on my Ajax turret mill and it's very good ...... and accurate ...... POP to run without my glasses too .
my back lash concern is more to do with chatter TBH ... rather than slide/saddle positioning, but a great suggestion

ball screws is a great idea Mike, as long as some suitable ones can be found .... not a huge amount of room in the screw slot in the saddle .... and this is not a production machine .... looking at it in bits it's had a hard life
