Is diesel gonna stay 20% more for the foreseeable? Would affect the economics of normal diesel cars I'd have thought?
might have said before -
before the advent of easily available diesel cars and the gov pushing ppl to drive them, diesel was always a lot cheaper than petrol ...
once they had a captive market of sheeples buying coal burners, diesel fuel jumped dramatically ..
may be more economical but miles /£ doesn't necessarily equate to cheaper against a petrol vehicle (unless it's a big lumper, like a RR)
when I was a youngster the P5 Rover was a sought after motor for dropping a 4 pot Perky into

Zactly. Im glad I hunted out a petrol for other half's daily. I mainly got petrol because she does about 6 miles per day so didn't want the dpf blocking up issue. Also these clean air zones seem to be a money hack for local govts and petrol is ok for that too.

only diesel car I've ever owned is the Golf, that Pam was driving ... needs testing, but barely scraped the emissions on the last one, which'd been halved from the previous year's levels, so can't see it scraping again -- she's not been driving for a while so hasn't been worth the 50 odd quid to find out  .... everything else is fine on it, but I detest diesel cars (although said Golf does go very well)

had to order some new covers for it all earlier in the week, as the originals had succumbed to 5 summer's of UK weather (and winds) and were splitting badly at the seams .. found a seller on the net in Barnsley - half the price almost of what they'd cost originally, when we bought the furniture .. seating was a mere 80 quid - table was a rip off half of that :( .. duly despatched with DPD and were 'sposed to arrive yesterday, according to the texts and emails from DPD, between 14.55 and 15.55 ... no show so l checked me email at 16.15 ... Deepak had delivered them at 15.30 to myself and had my signature - but no photographic evidence on the website :mad: ... Rang the suppliers who were pretty PO-ed to hear of yet another problem with DPD ... rang me back in ten min.s and said he admitted to delivering it to the property next to Wood Farm, 3/4 of a mile away :mad:twat:mad: which has a sign at the top of their drive saying 'the hollies' (deffo not 'Werngounsel barn', as per address on the package) W⚓ ....
" so how did he hand it to me in person and get my signature then? "
" good question! "
" I'll jump in the car and go see if I can find the covers mate - I'll call you back when I've found them "

No sign of them at Sheila's at the Hollies ... no sign of them at Shakespeare's farm, next one down from Sheila's
so gave Wood farm a try ... new owners there, been in about two weeks, so no idea who's there now?

Knocked the door and it's answered by a smart 35-40 yr old woman, who before I could open my mouth said " are you Graham? "
" I assume from that Q that you have my parcel ? "
" Yeh, was wondering who'd show up for it - found it on the doorstep when I got back about 5 min.s ago "
" Well according to Deepak at DPD, I now live here, he handed it to me in person and I signed for it at half three this afternoon -- DPD are in for some grief from me on Monday - there's 120 quidsworth of patio seating covers in that package, that he decided to leave on your doorstep, with no photo to prove the delivery "
so bit of a neighbourly natter and by the time I'd left, the suppliers'd shut, when I called them back :(

this is the third time these twats've done this - too 'kin lazy to drive down our drive - last time the knob left it in the rubbish cage at the top of the drive with all the other cardboard rubbish - lucky I found it 'fore the bin men in the morning, or it'd've disappeared - new cover for the polytunnel 🤬🤬

we used to have a Polish guy called Macjek who drove for DPD - he was superb and a nice guy with it - got PO-ed with getting double what he could get through in a day and jacked .. now all we get is Ghupta muppets 🤬

anyway, at least the covers were right and the right handing too, so we can at least leave the upholstery out at night now :giggle:

our Evri guy is brilliant - local guy -- Majcek was also brilliant for DPD ... they just didn't appreciate how good he was - obviously - he'd average 130 rural drops a day and they wanted to double it - tossers

once they had a captive market of sheeples buying coal burners, diesel fuel jumped dramatically .
Without going into the chemistry, crude oil is made up of a complex mix of hydrocarbons that can be separated in a refinery (technical term: cracking).
When the crude passes through the refinery, roughly 45% can be turned into petrol, 25% into diesel, 10% into jet fuel with rest being petrochemical feedstock at the top and bitumen at the bottom.
When every car ran on petrol, refineries ran at the rate to produce enough petrol and the remainder (effectively byproduct) accumulated and needed to find someone to buy it.
In any market economy (supply vs demand), if you have a lot of something that no one wants, it's worth very little regardless of what it cost to make.

So, when trains, buses and power stations were the only users of diesel, the fuel was very cheap. In the UK, diesel car numbers peaked in 2018 (12.5 million or 40% of registered cars), diesel becomes the limiting factor of what the production quantities will be. ie: diesel is the target product and the other fractions become the byproduct - hence the price of diesel goes up and petrol goes down.

Then you factor global politics and a couple of wars into the mix and the market behaves like a bag of rats.

I found a bit of a quick lazy hack to the seat catching the wind, as it was nearly going over. I just pulled the top cover off the corners so its not stretched out much and bunched up in the middle. I was going to take it off completely but needed tools. I can well imagine it taking off in an exposed location like yours. We are in a sheltered garden in suburbia. I may even loose the top frame altogether. What's the idea of it shade or keeping the seat dry?

shade Jim .... bloody useless at keeping the seat dry ..... ours is on two thumb screws so easily removed ... I've tried the corner trick too ... still presents too much wind resistance to be effective at keeping it put ... when it's really blowing the seat has to come off too :(
