do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
It’s the abs sensors reading different speeds. Increased radius of new tyres can set them off in the same way a reduced radius of a deflating tyre can apparently.
cheers MB ... makes sense, as I am ferked if I can see HTF it does it (y)

bit of a day yesterday ..... Vicki's car still with me - she has our Golf - ready to go get it booted and return for a re-test ... Stuck Clara in it at 08.45 for the school run ... jumped in and pressed the go button - NADA
(I'd had to jump it the day before after Pam'd had all the doors open on it, for a good two hours cleaning the insides and assumed all the interior lights'd dragged it down ... so it had plenty of running at high idle for a good twenty minutes once started and started fine after I'd washed it off)
legged it up a box, grabbed a battery and leads, connected up and away first touch  Hmm!

Walked Clara into school, a little late, hopped back in - you guessed it - NADA 🤬

Rang me local battery guys ... two options, even with the reg. no. ... four of each in stock "see you lunchtime, got to come into town for tyres - you can have a look at it --" no numbers on the damned thing
View attachment 43558
jumped it again (took battery and leads with me - me no daft :giggle: ) - and went home

Jumped it again at 12.00 and headed for town .. by the time I'd gotten to the battery guys they'd had a.n.other look and the option of two was now down to just the one, which went in the boot ... along with an oil and air filter for it .. looking at my oil change mileage written under the bonnet, I couldn't believe Vicki'd done 11.5k since I did it last

Jumped it and went off for some new rubber.
yeh you guessed - jumped it and went home with some new boots installed..
wallet seriously depleted :( ......
110 quid for a battery, can't recall the odds for the filters and another 170 bucks for two boots

Got home and tooled up to change said box of lectrickery ... was told that removing it from circuit should be ok  but!! .... wasn't taking any chances and kept the thing live whilst I swapped 'em over .. be just my luck for it not to be

obviously an original fit job -- all the leads were cable tied to the tray  and took some getting at ... couldn't lift the pole clamps as they were :( ... anyway - new one in, all functional (other than pissing off the infotainment ctr. [somehow:unsure:o_O]) job for Vicki to re-set that lot ..
quick coffee and off to collect Clara.
Was very happy when it started down at the school to come home :giggle:

So .. next Tuesday's gonna be -- wrestle and air box off the top of the motor (was a little bar steward last time) ... and give it a lube change ... along with (if they've arrived) a new set of Mintex discs and pads on the arse end
passed the rolling road fine and can't understand why -- had said to Chris (the MOT guy) that I'd be well surprised if it did, looking at them through the wheels on the ramp (drove fine though) ..... outer 60% of discs, both sides, rusty as a badger's bum - only acting on the centre 35-40% of the disc -- as if the outer 60% of the pads were missing - really weird wear -- will get some pix when I do them ..... looking forward to seeing what the bloody pads look like ???:unsure:o_O

In anticipation of this little task (and remembering what a bas**rd of a job the one side of the Golf had been, middle of last year) I also ordered this ...

which arrived this morning ... can't for the life of me see HTF they can do 'em for the 20 quid it cost ...
only a cheapy I know, but it ain't gonna be used daily, much like the cheapo swivel joint puller I had to do the P38's front swivels. Money well spent for the very limited usage it'll get -- shudder to think what a Sykes set'd cost
so, all in all, 's been a 'spensive couple of days :( .....

was saying to Pam this morning, yer average currently 'struggling' family'd've been up against sorting this easily, as an unforeseen expense on top of the usual monthlies ....
mounts up bloody quick and especially if you had to pay on top, for someone to sort it for you.

I dare say I'm not alone in wondering HTF the average inept/non able/incapable average Joe manages to get along, having to have to resort to having EVERYTHING done for them, from changing a plug, upwards -- must be horrendous, not being able 'to do' :(:censored:

final Q for anyone that has any idea -- HTF do the wheels 'talk' to the car's dash and tell you the air pressure in an individual tyre has changed ??????? o_Oo_O ...
happened the last time I changed a pair of tyres on the front, back last October? half a mile from the tyre guys and the dash is telling me there's a tyre losing pressure (one of the newly fitted ones) ...
checked 'em when I got home - fine - 2.5 bar -- new valves and dust caps fitted with the tyres - looked at the rims, when the tyres were off (remembering October's experience) and no visible sensors in them ..
HTF does it communicate???? :oops::unsure::unsure::unsure:
Some have fancy valves with sender units in them or as MB says the older abs type

The answer to average Joe ...they either get screwed or as is getting more common they do nowt, nada, no MOT no insurance and no f license now...get caught it's few hundred quid and away you go.joke.

Got a very similar set to that wind back tool @V8Druid, seems reasonable for how often I use it these days. I’m surprised the Skoda hasn’t got start/stop on a 66 reg?

I've found the best way with batteries is to go online shopping. Eurocarparts use VRM so use that to get the battery type. This will in turn get you the part number, dimensions and terminal orientation so cross reference that with what you have and go online shopping.
I found prices to very wildly, but often someone is off loading good batteries cheaper than anyone else. I got a good deal on one for my van, dumper too, they had a spec (CCA) way better than anyone else for a great price.
It paid off recently as the van alternator developed a fault and stopped charging. I was able to still drive around in it whilst the parts arrived.

I've never heard of TP being measured with ABS teeth, that's clever. I though they were all transmitters on the back of the valve. With those you have to keep the wheel in the right position for the car to tell you which is low.
You can buy aftermarket ones, i've got one and the transmitters are in the dustcap. The monitor is solar powered and mounted at the top of the windscreen.

thought it was very good VFM for the amount I'll ever use it .... apparently it is start/stop -- tyre guy showed me the disable switch on the dash :giggle::giggle: .... Vicki very sensibly has it turned off :cool:

buy all my big batteries on line ... 'Drema's pair a while back / dumper / and a monster for the Zetor ... needed the Fabia's then and there - end of  and generally buy me car batteries locally, date them, with a sharpy and it's easier to chuck 'em back when they fail, as they invariably do before warranty's out

Q for you all .... WTF is this on Ollie's 8015 ...... ran it up Monday, with a few other things, up to temp. and stretched its legs a little .... came on with ignition and didn't go off .. as far as I know it doesn't have 2 sp. tracking??? (or a switch for it)

MOT for Vicki's Fabia yesterday ... failed on ..... a pissy little bulb in the N/S mirror - side repeater for indicator. took some getting out after a youtube search of HTF to get at it ... and a flat spot on a rear tyre, which took it below the wear indicators everywhere else on its circumference -- rest'd do another K yet :( ... pair ordered, whilst stood beside the MOT man, for the morning (couldn't get 'em for today) :( oddball size on there

yesterday's frost, as I was pushing Harper up/down/up/down the drive in her pushchair/pram to get her to nod off for her morning nap ....

have owned three white cars in my life, (a Holbay Hunter GLS, and two V8 SD1s) - all of which were absolute bar stewards to keep clean/looking tidy -- (actually it was four, but never bothered to wash that one - just a cheap Granny run around stopgap)
had forgotten how hard a job they are to get properly clean :(:censored:

Why o why do us old farts get involved in repaired the extended family's cars :ROFLMAO:
Love your loyalty Gra - it's 'cos you know stuff 😇

Anyway two things:
1. why do modern batteries fail after only a few years? My Navara failed a few weeks ago at just over 4 years old ☹️
2. secondly, I love that brake pad wind back set - I want one 🤪
Do you happen to have a handy link to Amazon or eBlag etc?
I often buy boys toys and tools as used or recommended by guys of this forum 🤠

LOL .... what else do us old farts have to do :unsure::ROFLMAO:

if you look under most modern batteries the bottom isn't the bottom ... 's ribbed and the bottom is raised, reducing the gap between the case and the plates -- salts build up, short plates and premature failure results, long 'fore the guts're bollo-ed ... so I am told by a trusted source :mad: also understand that a reverse polarity ZAP from a good booster on a flat battery tends to 'dislodge' said salts :giggle:

as for the caliper set Dave ... I'll let you know what it's like, hopefully Tuesday, but seems that Matt - @pettsy has experience of a similar set too ... had them from Aims Tools, who I've had all sorts from under the Katsu label and all have proven to be perfectly acceptable gear so far .. for the cost ..... the set certainly looks tidy enough

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292098530507

their little 3" grinder proved invaluable under the P38 a while back, cutting the gear box cross member bolts off ... couldn't get a 4" or a die grinder cut off in the available space :( ... their die grinder is also a great weapon

https://www.aimtools.co.uk/ ......... think a couple of folks on here had one of their 12v tyre inflator compressors a while back ... cheap as chips

these arrived this afters with our ultra reliable Evri man .... excellent service from the sellers ... was expecting them Monday and was scratching my head for a minute or two thinking WTF have i bought now :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
1674934721657.jpeg

turned up just as I was finishing hand washing the Golf .... so mingin' the little pressure washer's a waste of time ... won't beat a sponge in yer danny for getting the sh1t off - and leaving it looking loved/like it's had a proper wash ;):giggle: ...

and while I was wet and cold (2C here today :(), had a manhole up and gave it a good flush with 20 gallons of watter - in a hurry .... would like to meet the *rick who plumbed in the ground floor shower room here, with a tee into an existing run with virtually no fall, what so ever ...
's ok as long as i keep on top of it once a month, as I discovered a few months after taking possession in 2010, when it had become a drain rod job  ...
's only 'bout a 20ft run, but so shallow it gets a build up, especially with these economy bloody cisterns  ...
done for a few more weeks, anyway (y)

was a bit of an interrupted night, last night ... 4 am Pam's waking me up -- " someone's just come over the cattle grid and sure I can see torches up at the barn " aye so could I .... dragged me togs on in the dark - didn't want to switch any lights on .. grabbed me pick handle and jumped in the Golf .... not the quietest thing to go charging up there with and they'd ferked orf, by the time I got there .... no signs of damage to the barn's lock and all three donkey boxes still parked there ... had a mooch about but they were long gone ... might have to sleep with a very cocked ear tonight ;) ..... the thievin' bas***ds are about the area ATM

The longest lasting batteries are those which are best protected from the elements and don't get totally flattened. You should get at least 10yrs out of one.
As soon as a battery gets flattened by leaving something on (by accident) that's it, it'll never be the same.
If they're tucked away somewhere in an insulated box it makes them last longer too. I once scrapped a Vito which had rotted away, it still had it's original battery! As far as mechanicals were concerned it was the best van I ever had, nothing ever broke on it up to about 120k when I got rid.
The whole thing went to Eastern Europe and the engine is probably still alive in something else. It was bomb proof, shame the bodywork wasn't, I could have got my arm in the cills.
I've recently (last year) replaced the battery in a 2011 Vivaro, her 2013 Pug has it tucked away in an insulated box up near the bulkhead and it still starts. I can hear it's not as good as it was, but despite being stood in -7c for several days it still works.

I had a 2011 Varta on the Countax, off one of me FLTs I scrapped, only died last year .. the cold got it and a 2014 that the recent cold spell got to, too :( ... both sat in me 'tool' box, but it gets cold in them overnight (and day recently).
all me spares get a regular rotational trickle top up, sat in the box. The older stuff deffo lasts a lot longer than anything recent, for sure. Have had a few that haven't made it to their 2 yr warranty expiry ... 's why I buy smaller ones locally ... easier to chuck back at 'em, when they're dated with a sharpy and POP to turn up the paperwork ;)

On the subject of car batteries, I was once reccomended 'optima' so i put one in my shogun 5 years ago, and its still going strong (although I've probably jinxed it now). It's an agm type battery with 'spiral cells'.
