Local joiner made his own sliding gate and just fitted a wheel at either end few wheels to keep it upright. Not as good as the proper setup but does seem to work and he saved a few. You have to sum up who all will be operating this gate and how often.

I had a set of 4m (2x2 meter leafs) made from it, light weight was a big factor, if they were oak / mahogany they’d weigh double and forever be a pain, accoya won’t swell up/move so much.
As for your frame the bottom rail wants to be substantial as all the weight pivots on one point while opening/closing other than a guide wheel at each end. I have seen a lot of them use a round tube on the bottom, 100/150mm+

It can see the attraction of wood gates for home. I find them ascetically more pleasing, but we made the mistake of going for just wood as the guy making them assured us he would brace them properly for power and they would be fine. Unfortunately they twist with the changes in weather. In hindsight I would have paid more and have a metal frame with wood covering. It would keep them true and look nice.

had several sets of these in iroko (i think its called?). No sag if made properly but then again if they are tracked then they are never going to sag anyway.

It's weird stuff @V8Druid at a similar price to Oak I don't see the attraction of it myself!
What should I do then just look for a local metalworker? What section should the frame be 50x50?
wouldn't be my choice for sure ... at oak prices i'd use oak ... keruing is also extremely durable ... frame -wise I'd be going more 75 x 50 RHS or even 90/100 x 50 on edge .... 50 suare'd be a tad light for side ways flex, even in a 4 or 5mm wall and the RHS on edge'd be far stiffer

Iroko is very nice if you want a natural finish so you can see the wood grain rather than painted. Took over from teak when that was banned I think.

Easily spent 50k on wooden windows/doors the last 3 years, had so many problems with most timbers yet zero issues with accoya, I always pay the extra and have them made from it now. Only use oak for oak framed garages and decorative beams etc, it’s far too unstable in comparison. Just my experience 😎

I think i've decided on a pair of second hand iron gates at around 12ft opening, with a side pedestrian gate at 3ft. I've already got the pedestrian gate and have spotted a few options for some matching 'ish' driveway gates online. then just get the posts made up to suit. Ideally i'd have liked to be able to automate the lock on just the pedestrian gate with intercom so I can let someone in but it seems a bit of a pain with the gate not having any box section and my zero welding ability.

So what is the best way to go about locking this pedestrian gate? Do I just get a keep (as pictured below) and a long padlock or a padlockable shoot bolt (as pictured too)? Existing gate to be used pictured

...obviously not a high security arrangement here, just don't want the gate being opened and dog getting out

Have you looked at magnetic gate catches. Or possibly a mechanical keypad lock for entry. Anyone who visits regularly will know the number others will have to phone for entry

Looked at both. The head scratcher for me is how to attach them to the gate!

Take it to your local blacksmiths or fab shop or plant yard or anywhere with a welder and offer a few beer tokens to get them to weld what you want on

Yeah just put a mag lock on ped gate.

And a push button for its operation.

Oh and you'll need summat in a hinge to prevent it being lifted ..... hole with a pin in it ... split spring thing ... can't recall the name of 'em ATM  hammer 'em in

Have seen a few where you put top pin upside down. Presumably you un bolt the eye from the gate to fit.

What would you paint with @V8Druid that aliprimer stuff?

even better if they're not already hung

depends what colour you want to end up with really, but the ali is a great primer/top coat ... as you guys have seen lately ;)(y)
tip for painting ornamental gates .. do it before you hang it ... turn it upside down and paint all you can see ... then the right way up .. then side and side ... you might get it all then .... much easier than grovelling on the floor trying to reach it all upside down

It doesn't put too much weight on one pin if I do that then? Driveway gates approx 1750 x 1200
