From the desert to a slightly different job I’ve been on lately keeping my hand in on the Brokks while the normal ops were on holidays on a 12 storey + plantroom in Dublin

The factory thats being demolished sits on the site of the former kynoch explosives plant in Arklow
it produced explosives during the first world war and there was a massive explosion there towards the end of the war
its worth a read if anyone has in interest in war time articles

Had heard mention of that alright, the whole history of the site is interesting, though I’d say a lot will be glad to see it gone, had become a suicide hotspot apparently and there was a lot of antisocial behavior there

Mark, it’s a new 300-7 the first hitachi they have bought. It’s a nice machine and everyone reckons with the 6 cylinder engine there’s more power in it than the liebherr 936. Just have to see how it takes the punishment of demo work over time. Two things I’ve noticed on it is adblue is a pain to fill with drums and the little panel on the cab beside the door keeps flying open

Great machines (when they aren’t giving electrical problems), but the further away you can get that deckchair the better, like on a beach away from it nothing good about spending a day on one, you’re generally in a shitty dusty environment and standing all day is surprisingly hard and that’s without having to dodge the stray rebar or lumps of concrete that occasionally get fired at you that said nothing else can touch them in terms of production in their environment

Yeah big machines. The high section was 30m boom was about 40m had to go up and over to take off asbestos sheeting. Also had a big 60m Bronto truck mounted hoist taking down the 45m chimney on site.

you bought a new -7 didn’t you? How are you finding it?

Yeah we took a 490-7 in the summer it’s been good for us so far, just under 1000 hours on it. Had them out at the start with the boom squeaking had it reshimed and been fine since. Same engine in the 490 as the bigger 690 and 890 model’s. Have ordered a 350-7 it’s hopefully going to be on display at Scot plant this year if it goes ahead.

Finished up an awkward little job this week, awkward neighbors, gate posts, and services everywhere but we got there.

Here’s a slightly different job we did a few months back where the aim for once was to keep the building standing. A listed building in the middle of Dublin City developed a major bulge at ground level (over 300mm). We had to dig out erect steel to be used to carry needles at a later date for repair then use kentledge on the outside to prevent the wall moving (Kelly blocks with the gaps packed with leanmix). Dug out the floor in basement, poured a footing and a steel frame was put up to prevent the blocks from putting pressure on the walls of the building, then clear ivy off the building. It was an emergency job so all done with quick action. We used the liebherr 900 duck for slinging in the blocks. Logistics were the biggest challenge as our only access was up a busy little lane. The blocks will be removed in sections and wall rebuilt eventually.

Amazes me why people like ivy on their buildings
