I used to have a bowling ball from an American airbase alley. It was a gnat’s bigger than an AMF ball and was forever jamming the ball return mechanism. I got banned from using it.

Well we got the bowling alley finished up a couple of weeks ago, was a real nice job and worked out well. Now on a 12 story work down in the centre of Dublin helping the lads out until my next job lands..

Came across a picture of a project I was involved in at various stages between 2015 and 2018 out in Dubai, the site for the Expo 2020 world trade show. I would have put a lot of pictures up on the old ceforum of demolition works, earthworks and road building I was involved in and I’ve put a few up now just so people can appreciate how incredible it is! Basically a new city built on a 1300 acre site in less than 5 years, and from March next year a lot will be knocked down again/ repurposed.

Just shows what you can do with enough money and absolute rule. I don't suppose extinction rebelion are supergluing themselves to anything out there.

Sactly ..prob more diesel used in that than all UK put together

No it’s very much tow the line, any sort of revolt/uprising/protesting will quickly find you locked up followed by a plane journey home. Politics aside it’s still a phenomenal achievement.

we certainly burned through it.. we had about 150 trucks and big plant on the muckshift alone. The number of cranes up there was mental

Everything out there must be on a large scale, I've just done a house site for a local guy that's based in Abu Dhabi did the work with a Hitachi zx130, he said its mostly Hitachi they have to mostly ex1200,

In general yes everything is big. Not many people run hitachi out there, a few companies I know of run some big ones (870s and up) on marine works but would be unusual to see them on the average site for some reason, as they have most other brands but hitachi don’t have a big following at all out there

What method do they use for level control over there Conor? Are they fully bought into using machine control yet? Time saving on a job like that would be using machine control would be crazy. I run it on all of our earthmoving machinery now, just the general plant hire machines that don’t have it.

Not at all Mark they’re years behind, you don’t even see quickhitches on any machines of any size. It is starting to come in though in very small numbers. When I was at the earthworks we had a demo on a 155 dozer with the intention of purchasing a few units for a huge job which wasn’t won and so nothing was done. That full 1300 acres (and many more projects) was set up in a 25m grid and with a line and dipped. Hugely labour intensive and reliant on surveyors not making mistakes which they inevitably do. The picture is another project I was on but you get the idea.

That’s crazy! the likes of a cat 16 grader would trim 25m2 to level first time round with no error in under 5 mins. I only used to have machine control on the dozers But recently put it on all or prime movers. It’s made me wonder why I didn’t do it sooner. Can’t even remember last time we used batter rails and Profiles.

no doubt it’s the way forward. Over there the profit was in the jobs to carry on as they had always done, things changing slightly now and starting to see things moving forward

can remember a guy i know in the hydraulics game who got invited out there a few years a go to have a look and help spec a couple of service vans. he was saying that ay breakdown even minor the machines where moved out of the way and parked up and just left there.
