I googled and every forum with threads on ‘what tonnage press’ was full of replies saying ‘they’d buy bigger next time’ and 20t ‘is ok for a hobby shop’.

You can be always stop at a pressure, you can’t make a little ram bigger !

I agree with this I have a 30 tonne press, admittedly they are Chinese tonnes which probably weigh much less but I would get a bigger press next time.

The old Churchill press is good for almost 60t with me bouncing on the pump handle but there was a good ole flex to the frame at that. We also have a Finlay frame press that's good for 150 ton, came from a ship builder over at the east coast. Was powered by big 3ph pump, the lever on it is a bit hit and miss you don't know if you have 12 ton or 120 ton. It crumples up PFC no bother but you have to have your wits about you when using it. Which the last time was probably 2 years ago

I ran both mine off a power pack, with a 15hp motor .... the 50'd crush 2" of 43 x 3 chs down to about a 20mm thick 'washer'

I've worked out the conversion.

I bought a "40 ton log splitter" (bloody marvelous it is too)
The pump claims to be good for 3600psi and the ram has a 5" piston.
A little bit of maths and you get 70686 lbs or 32 tonne

so in my case, a chinese ton is 30% smaller than a real one!
(I haven't measured the pump to find out what a chinese "psi" looks like!!)

if my memory serves Mick there were half a dozen of each in that batch .... or may have been 8 and 4 .... three collars per lock - a pair for the main gates and a.n.other for the top gate
