There’s two plant firms running fasttracks and plant trailers locally, and another with a big fendt. If I was an owner-op of a hgv doing the same work i’d Be savage.

All it needs is a clear press release from the government and a couple of highly publicised prosecutions.

Ease up Graham still a bit of fight left in me 💪
ditto Kev .... til Aug. 22nd, 2010 ...... never know what's around the corner  .....
I was bullet proof and fit as a flea 'til that point .... lost over 4st, in 10 days and body shutting down initially ... did not think I was coming out  ... I owe the medics a lot.(y)
Yeah depends if its something you love or a means to an end.
I did ... but'd been considering a 'wind down' for some time - had stuff still to do, just bought a new house, and BANG! all changed overnight, as good as :(
Would've much preferred it be my decision, at my own pace and timing.

A lot of bypass/road jobs will incorporate existing roads as the worksite..... 😉 All very odd
if it's live to traffic they have to comply with reg.s - end of ......
A465 here has been on going for years .... one stretch they were running loaded ADTs and traccy/dump combis. .......
Ministry turned up with plod and closed 'em down for a week or more whilst they built a haul rd alongside the road ...
there were also prosecutions for running red, loaded plant on rebated fuel, non license holders, tachos, etc., etc. to say nowt of roadworthiness issues
sadly it was not well publicised or documented, or a lot around here'd have sh1t themselves, otherwise

Depends. Some jobs will take full possession of set roads.... Often only bypass jobs. Road will still be open but it's management entirely at the whim of the project.

I know the road your on about, my understanding is it was due to distances involved and the fact the entire road was not in possession.

semi correct ... running 2/3rds - 1mile and in live traffic .... fact remains they got hammered for it ... and rightly so - haul rd was in the spec. ... they were cutting corners

I was actually talking about both options.

If you can get Iffor or an engineers report uprating the triple to 4500kg as per the axle limits with active brakes & the vehicle can take it a pre 19-01-2013 BE licence holder can tow it.

Or as above the pin weight on a 5th wheel is actually vehicle weight so a post 19-01-2013 BE can tow a real 4500kg (ish) as only 3500kg is via the trailers wheels.

Best option is say a 6T vehicle that had a 12T GTW down plated to 3500kg but keeping the full GTW with active trailer brakes on a pre 19-01-2013 BE licence. In theory you could get a real trailer weight of 6.5T (not much payload left after 5th wheel unit is fitted).

Or just take the C1E or CE tests & have what you need.
So can I drive this now?

Urban artics are the biggest clusterfuck going and best avoided.

Why so ??
I got the impression they where better from driver and operator point of view than wagon and drag, at least on brick and block work.
And think a 25ft triple steer low loader trailer would trump an 8 wheel beavertail for manoeuvrability.
I think an oil tanker could beat a 32t beavertail for manoeuvrability

A urban artic is not a artic.... 25ft artic carrying a 8 leg beavertail is a artic, same with tankers.

Urban artics are anything with a tractive unit under 18t, typically on either a single or tandem trailer and generally sitting at about 25t GTW. The reason they exist is really there Demountability and being able to carry a larger payload on a narrower lorry..... Trouble is sub 7.5t Urban artics aren't really worth a toss, you need a O license for the trailer and a MOT for the trailer.... Even on a 3.5t urban tractor unit.

I've researched them several times.... Namely because I've been offered 3 separate 14t Volvo FL220 tractor units and trailers (should of brought the first one) Basically unless your interested in carrying heavy long material your better off with a rigid.

Oh right I always thought they where mini arctics and thought of urban arctics as the
32t+ setups running super short with twin or triple powersteered axles
Apart from brewery's I've not actually seen the sub 25t ones in person.

Na, just a artic them.

Baby trailers behind proper artics are awesome BUT you can sometimes get in places you can't escape from if your cocky.
