They are tapped but with a smaller thread should have room for a nut

To be fair I find it takes a frustrating ten minutes normally minus some skin . There’s no way to get a socket or a spanner on so it’s a 1/4 of a turn at a time job.

Would socket head (Allan) bolts give you better access?

It’s a corn mill/root chopper base, think they come in 4 different sizes. I know a guy who used to use them for fancy table bases.

we have a beet chopper/shredder here that's, I'd guess, the next size down, full of plants.
Pam bought it at a dispersal sale 30 odd years ago -- from here, when the guy sold up and moved to Oz ... it came home in 2010, when we moved here. The guy who sold up, comes to visit us occasionally when he's over from Oz and spotted it first time here

That’s usually what he did, allthough they were all custom to clients spec so lots of variations. I think he’s got one on his own patio that’s got a glass top. Proper pieces of engineering, dread to think how many were sacrificed for tables (phosphor bronze bushes were a bonus!)
