and another set of costs for that .. feed in is crap and break even on PV is beyond panel life - significantly beyond ... looked at it a few years ago, just before the feed ins crashed and burnt for the 40p mark ... was still dire returns at those feed ins

but in the meantime .... if it's crap, you're out of pocket and committed to it for 7 years ..... it's no cheaper to run, with no guarantee of it being any good..... and if it ain't you have to suffer it for 7 years 'fore you can replace it with summat that does work .......

You've kinda nailed it but it's working for us as we put load of underfloor heating in etc and have big logburner...but from what I gather they're ramming them in loads of new builds ...couple that with eleccy car charging points the grids gonna get a shock.

Yeah PV be good as druid says it didn't stack up for me.
Big batteries cheap would be an option but I'm not really into all this crap felling,splitting and burning is more my style.

it's annoying ..... Vicki is always doing it .... I keep an eye on ours and'll fill it when I can get a 1000 into the tank --- 1600L job so always a good reserve and won't drag Matt's guys up here for less than 1000L ... Vicki's is on a Tiger loop so always self primes pretty quick as it's pumping at a fair rate ..... gravity fed can be a PITA ... unless you have a good head - ours is about 7 ft.
what did it cost you Stu .... ours has gone up considerably ... was 29p last Nov and was up to 42p last week .... use about 8L a day, this time of year ... not bad really .... like to keep the house a comfortable temp. ... keep it warm and it stays warm ... let it cool down and it takes ages to warm again .. big ol' stone walls, as you know.

by a looooong way ... ran rings around the various salesmen I had here and all ended up conceding what I'd already worked out .... it just didn't compute .. was a total con ....... and that was based on the 48.2p/unit FITs then

mine is always a better rate, which makes me laugh ....
they really can't be trying very hard, plus they're probably buying pissy amounts at a couple of dozen locations, so it's gonna be dear

The thing with ground source and air source is they are only really capable of heating water up to 40-45 degrees. So swapping a traditional heating system to either from oil is a non starter unless ur gonna get a few jackets in the deal. If you're well insulated and underfloor heating then they can be worthwhile. Still need to boost hot water though.

The thing with ground source and air source is they are only really capable of heating water up to 40-45 degrees. Nope...hot water is sound , got 300L tank heats it to 50 odd deg no worries seriously quick as well. upgraded all rads and this winter it's been ok after lot of faffing with settings and balancing etc. On a new build eco box be fine. Ours is ancient dormer bungalow that's been ripped apart multiple times so not ideal. The underfloor heating areas work sound, it's the older parts with rads it's struggles when temp gets -5c etc.

Sound like I'm trying to sell it just our experience . If it wasn't for having a decent mate who knows the ropes with setting up and gov registration I'd have run a mile.

Yeah it has a legionella program every so often the immersion fires up think monthly?

You'll be surprised how often immersion is on tbh its the only way ground/air source systems can respond fast that's the let down with them for me, brilliant for underfloor but but crap for hot water.

need a different nozzle to run red, but otherwise it'd run fine .... easily available and about a fiver for nozzles .... doesn't burn fully with a kero nozzle

said the other night elsewhere .... if/when they stop ease of red availability, I'd consider going over to red for my heating to have a tankful sat .... might cost a bit more for the heating, but would at least have red for everything else

im not a fan of heat pumps to be honest. We fit them to nearly all the new builds now as they help with the SAP and it saves having to do any solar.

The big downside to them, and we use air-source, is they don't work very well when it gets cold. They freeze up solid and an internal immersion kicks in to defrost them and away they go again. You can imaging the juice they draw. Driving underfloor heating they are fine as tepid is ok but for a family using it for a shower etc then they are pretty useless compared to a combi and a combi never runs out of hot water.

Groundsource i am told is a lot better as they don't freeze up the same and if you cant get gas then its a better option that oil for sure. If you have the land you can run the groundloops in a couple of long trenches to save the £££ of having a bore hole dug.
