as you may guess, the above is the gland seal out of the Cranab ram .... little bitch it was too .
step one .... evacuate said ram of liquid gold (also known as Plantohyd ;)) in a controlled manner :ROFLMAO: .... saves a lot of cleaning up of 2 litres of oil
WP_20200518_17_37_32_Pro.jpg

WP_20200518_17_41_16_Pro.jpg

step 2 find out WTF is lurking behind the cover plate
WP_20200518_18_00_13_Pro.jpg

I had actually sussed it by this point and had installed the SHCSs to deal with it ... had spaced said cover out to get a hold of it with the 4 ft stillis to rotate the end cap lurking in the cylinder to free it off ... so's I could tap it back in

WP_20200518_18_01_23_Pro.jpg

to reveal this gert spring clip
WP_20200518_18_08_18_Pro.jpg

which took some extracting
WP_20200518_18_21_14_Pro.jpg

tapped it in first to get an end out the groove, to get under it to get behind it with this

WP_20200518_18_23_08_Pro.jpg

can't recall what I made it for maaaany years agom to pull summat out of somewhere, but it's done a few little jobs over the years ... and worked very well on this one too :giggle: that was some spring clip - 6mm and serious
some compressed air into the extend port and this popped out, sweet as, after id give the neck of the cylinder a good wipe clean first, of course
WP_20200518_18_27_39_Pro.jpg

grub screw located and removed and it came apart sweet ...
WP_20200518_19_08_42_Pro.jpg

somebody else'd been in there at some time .. ****ing butchers :(
WP_20200518_19_08_57_Pro.jpg

all it needed was a decent sized adjustable (see previous pic) and came off - "simples" ... allowing access to the gland/end cap
WP_20200518_19_09_03_Pro.jpg

which simply slid off :giggle::giggle:
WP_20200518_19_25_37_Pro.jpg

the acetal bearings were a POP ....... the seal on the other hand took some persuading out of where it lived

piston pack looks fine ... all off and cleaned ...
WP_20200518_19_26_16_Pro.jpg

as does the dirt scraper seal out of the end cap
WP_20200518_19_28_11_Pro.jpg

not a dint or mark on it

and i'm out o' pix again

whilst I had the beast securely tehtered to the bench I bumped the base bushes out as the one had worked its way into the centre, as it was devoid of a spacer ....
WP_20200518_19_58_10_Pro.jpg

went back in sweet ...

WP_20200518_20_03_03_Pro.jpg

I'll make it a 3/4 spring spacer tomorrow and slip it in there ... nowt available to suit the bore size today ... 59 milly is a weird size  andno lathe :( to make a solid one up 😡

everything clean and sat indoors tonight ... awaiting a new seal .... 's a lump of a rod
WP_20200518_20_43_00_Pro.jpg

looking a lot tidier, even if I do say so myself :giggle::giggle: ... did um and arrr about blacking the pins, but could always do them again , a pin at a time ;) ....
wanted it off the bench ........ just got a few scratches/battle scars to touch up on the tongs ...the Druid gold hadn't really had time to harden off properly  like glass when it's left a few days/a week (y):giggle:

more pix of the ram dismembering here if anyone wants a blow by blow .... https://s1275.photobucket.com/user/v8druid/library/buckets?sort=3&page=1

Thoughts on this rod Druid?
Will be getting done under warranty by finning, got them to replace rod and reseal it last august. Month or two later started scoring like so, perfect scoring length wise on the rod and 360 degrees. Got another new rod and resealed in January and done the exact same again only 300 hours on so on this rod and done the exact same.

Something wrong with the end cap/gland?
Has it got a cushion in the ram?

Had a very similar thing in a dipper ram, old machine, but had a big collar behind the gland, it looked fine, but was picking up on the road and ruined it.
