I can't see how it ever stacks up owning your own transport be it tractor/mog/lorry unless you have a significant secondary/multi purpose use for it like @Furniss

yeah my truck does much more than move plant, depends on your work I guess and sometimes I prefer to get aggs in so I can keep digging but generally works very well to be self sufficient, wouldn't go back and having done it both ways for years I have a good handle on what pays best overall for us.

The shorter duration the jobs are the better a truck will work. Something like driveways or dropped kerbs are incredibly efficient with a lorry. Especially if someone can go tip of and collect materials whilst others keep working.

So basically minimum of £300. I struggle a bit to justify getting another 8 tonner even though I want one again. An 8 ton digger and 9 ton dumper is £860 a week delivered and collected- £680 there after. So £150 say a day- would I want to have my own digger and dumper out there for £150 a day- definitely not!

Hard to actually do the maths - even to the point of some years using a transporter may have been financially better than owning your own truck and others truck worked best, like anything when you have the kit you find the ways to make it pay, last year of using a Haulage guy cost me approx 4200€ plus vat, but our truck cost me over 60k€ so thats got to be figured in,but it will have decent residual I guess, 60k seemed a lot but something that will reliably transport dumper/3 tonner or whatever isnt cheap either nowadays, whats a decent pickupand trailer cost or something like a 7t iveco ?

When I cost my own time into it I realise I'm just not bothered. Much easier to offload the hassle. I only work locally though so two trips to move a digger and loader is less of an issue.

The entire transport/digger debate is simple.
If you can charge a premium to arrive immediately and do emergency work and you need a lorry to do so then you need a lorry.
If not get someone to shift it.
Same with diggers, if you need your own machine to be a bit specialist, or you want to leave them on a job for a few days to make your life easy you need to own it.... Otherwise hiring is cheaper.

we tend to be like Rory have more older machines that don't owe us anything that can sit on jobs then be used when necessary, 5 ton hasn't bebe back to the yard in other 3 years jus goes job to job or goes to my transport guys farm, thankfully all our jobs are rural either farms or estates and often have compounds for rangers etc.
just cost me £100 to have 5 ton shifted 4 miles up road from one job to other as guy was passing empty and only took him 30 mins normally its £240 for a 20 mile ish move, but will sit there a month in that farm until we can get to the job.
again like Rory said having a raft of special attachments and buckets for your own machine just makes it so much easier than hiring some pos, we've hired a few times when distance didn't make sense and im constantly disappointed with what arrives. although im thinking I wont be replacing my 16t ton anytime soon and just hire the transport lads as he's Jost had a new jcb145 with blade, can hire it for 400 a week
