could have done without this ....what a little bitch of a thing to get out ... only two mount bolts, but getting at the one was @+*$&¬ !!
first time I've had to put a spanner to it properly really though
never been the greatest of starters .. can sort of see why now
not an easy thing to get yer hands into

but got it off

dog stuck out ... which went back in with very little persuasion so reckon the ring gear'd have chucked it back in - had it started, anyway ...
View attachment 71159
weird set up - dog is rubber mounted on a cup shape - the top hat washer gets thrust up into and against the rubber cup and presumably drives through friction (but would allow it to 'free wheel' once the motor fires before the starter is released

armature looked fine

Druid, what make / HP rating is that engine?
I’ve got a scrap twin cylinder Honda engine sitting here. if the starter might be any help to you I’ll take some pic’s.

have failed to find a rebuild kit with the brushes (and ideally bushes) this morning so have had to buy a new starter at 100 quid - mower's useless without one - will continue to search for a kit though as the rest of it is decent enough and could do with a second starter for the second Dane I have, which came as a ''spares or repairs' with the runner :giggle:

Is this them?

cheers -- very close - I'd seen that one, but the brushes are wedge/tapered shape - mine are parallel  and the terminations on the shorter wired brushes are different - the starter is off a 23hp motor - kawasaki twin
will pull mine apart and get some pix -- it is very close though - can't understand WTF they'd taper the brushes either
this is the starter and had 15% discount off that with a 'voucher'

L&S want 188 quid plus VAT and shipping for the same thing :(

While you are in there, have a look at the over-run clutch - I think it will make you cringe.

these look more like it ..... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12662877...lp:2332490&itmmeta=01JRJBGS6JHF4HRMG2RM3YYG7G
will have to go measure up the original brushes and lead lengths and see how they compare

there appears to be two lengths of these starter motors - short up to circa 12hp and the longer unit for the bigger (up to 23hp) motors

That's the one - wtf is right, but apparently it works.
When I pulled mine apart, I thought the clutch was shot and I was up for another starter

can you not find some oversized brushes and file them down ?
they all have cables attached Bob ...... and springs

WP_20250411_16_09_08_Pro.jpg
WP_20250411_16_07_42_Pro.jpg

two attached to a bolt and two with slide on clips to secure to the back plate with the body assembly bolts o_O
WP_20250411_16_07_59_Pro.jpg

real strange assemblies -- that last ebay link I put up look pretty damned close ... needed to check the dimensions though and having had a look they're 6.5mm thick, 10mm tall and circa 12.8mm long max. .. the springs are 6.3mm dia and attach to a spigot on the back of the brushes, so they're 'off the menu' .. too big and no spring spigots

these look pretty close and have asked the seller for some dimensions
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275871434362?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11050.m43.l1123&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=a88ba88335764d5eb7dc133f2a79de35&bu=43146294996&osub=-1~1&crd=20250411144158&segname=11050

first pic is the max length that'll fit in the carrier with spring fully compressed

as I say these are no 'ordinary' brushes
I tried the starter motor supplier, but no such luck - doesn't do brushes/rebuild kits
someone, somewhere'll have these - just a case of finding who ??

dimensionally perfect (y)
so got the cable attached
WP_20250411_16_06_26_Pro.jpg

and I set about getting it installed in its new home
WP_20250411_16_54_52_Pro.jpg

which is a bit of a bar steward to get at ... :(:(
WP_20250411_16_55_00_Pro.jpg
after wrestling it into spot and battled to get it up in place I could NOT get the bolts to start in the tapped holes .. no way - no how ...
so wrangled it back out and went and got the mount plate from the original for comparison ... due to the bend in the mount plate not being absolutely exactly the same it was fouling on two spigots/lips/casting flanges on the crank case by about half a mil and pushing the bolt holes up half a mil too high ... 😡
grinder time ....
re-profiled the radius on the bend of the new mount plate at the relevant points and after a couple of tries (and wrestling the damned thing in/out a few times - did not wanna take too much off) I got it just right and in it went :giggle::giggle:
got most of the Dane back together 'fore I got interrupted by tea ...
finished off the last couple of bits after ... re-connected the box of lectrickery ... and gave it a try
hell did it throw that Kwaka lump over ...
best start I've ever had with the old girl :giggle::love:
so..........
WP_20250411_19_22_01_Pro.jpg
WP_20250411_19_22_11_Pro.jpg

the green tish got a massacring
and as she'd been such a 'good girl' and performed faultlessly (and it was only half seven) I took her up to me boxes and wound up the compressor, for a good blast off
WP_20250411_19_37_40_Pro.jpg

unbelievable amount of dry grass every where and particularly in the belt cover - gonna have to do this more frequently .. ain't that many hour/cuts, since I replaced the belt and it was all cleaned out last.
Fair play, this is one hell of a mower - very little slows it down :giggle:- only time I've ever stalled it was with a large quantity of bale wrap, hiding in some very tall weeds, 🤬 up doing the barn/turning spot jungle .. took some extracting from the blades after 😡

Now all I need is some brushes to rebuild the old starter and I'll see if I can't get the spares/repairs second one running -- I have a few ideas for that one :unsure::giggle::giggle:

Don’t know if the part number helps as a quick check.

If this might be of use give me a shout and I’ll unbolt it today and take some better pics and some measurements.

very kind offer Rob, but sadly that is a pre-engage unit, not an inertia jobby .... that'd probably make 80 quid plus on Fleabay - new it's over double that

it's a hard life being a cat ... these two are getting on better, quietly -- Sqeak loves to sit on the pump box, sunning himself -- t'other has sussed it's a good spot too

bit of wood worky this afters ... our neighbours who own the 'horsey' barn and several of the fields around us, had a little barn conversion, holiday let, 'bout half a mile away, which they sold recently ... sent two of their daughters to clear it out and the girls simply broke up any furniture they couldn't handle or get out the door in one piece, which was a lot .. ended up on their burning bonfire pile on the turning circle by their barn and I 'liberated' a lot of it for the woodshed - anything decent I stuck aside - Pam is always on to me to make her planters, so thought some of it'd come in for a few ... thought I'd have a crack at some today
