The fan cover looks repairable if it comes to it.

Well today the repaired fan cover (courtesy of Charles) came back, and the unit was rebuilt with the new injector and the rocker seals (also courtesy of Charles) Still a little white smoke till she warms up, then the usual black smoke! Oil stays the same on the dipstick without ever adding it... so if its getting past the rings its not much? I will give her a good clean out while top is off and then an oil change. When I was in the WN place getting bits I got well over excited and bought some 2 pack paint for the thing. Didnt pay attention to the ££ which was a mistake! I might get around to painting it... or may wait till I have finished the top yard and the middle yard and the bottom yard and then dads yard and the back yard, and the works yard, I may find it no longer required and let it go to a new owner. That is at least 2 years away though Will try and get a photo tomorrow.

make a small flat bar subframe .... mount the cooler to it with its original points and locate the new subframe to some better points on the fan cowl - 's only carrying the cooler

As (probably) said before, black smoke is over fuelling so you've got to find out why. If it's getting enough air in and you've done the injector then onto the next possibilities:
Is the excess diesel able to get away from the injectors via the bleed off pipes?
Is the fuel pressure adjustable, how and can it be checked/adjusted? It could be too high meaning too much fuel is going in.
Is there a WS manual available for this engine?

It went to local specialists who tested and said one okay and one fubar. That’s all I know.

That's one thing ruled out then. Have you checked the air inlet side of the engine for any defects, blocked air filter etc?

Is it getting air after the lift pump or before the lift pump?

Starts up lovely. No smoke. Running under load nicely with new injector. Under full revs lightly smokes pale smoke. Once up to temp the smoke is the usual dark. Seems to be working as well as before now. I think @Giles says his one has a smoking issue as well?

Treating it to an engine oil change before it goes back to the shed.. got the oil type nailed down but cant find oil volume. Does anyone know the approx capacity on a twin cyl air cooled Hatz engine?

I couldn't do anymore without model and engine number/type.
There is another way of course. Check oil level, drain off, measure what has come out.

Yes.. that is one way! I was about to order up a can or 2, and its been that long since I changed oil in anything that I have no idea if I need to buy 5 or 10 liters!

10W/30 or 10W/40 .... give it some good stuff ... won't go wrong with a detergent like Rimula

I think its 10W/30. I have the spec sheet from WN on my desk.. just haven't a clue how much of the stuff! I used to do all my own all changes ( and my dads) from early teens up to about mid 20s - then haven't since. Do people run engine flush on machines or just warm it up and drain it out - then refill? (New filter obviously)
