New van Oil

The 24 plate Movano has a 20k service interval? Me and our local garage agreed to do it at 10K to be safe. It flashed up a “Change Oil”warning at 8.5k. Garage changed it over weekend and it was apparently s**t awful/filthy to the point where they gave it a flush and want it back in again before too long to wash out again.
Disappointing, but interesting that the engine is sensing it. 2.2 Peugeot engine I think? but not familiar with the Stellantis power trains.

Manufacturer will state you must obey variable service interval warnings...ignore at your peril.
In event of a blown engine rest assured the diagnostics will tell them how long the change oil light was on before been reset etc.....

I have heard that the oil can get diluted somehow from incomplete DPF burns? No idea how fuel can get into the oil like that but its a thing!
The cars can sense this somehow and it throws the change oil warning up at you.
Personally, 20k for a diesel is too far for me. Regular oil changes cant be a bad thing for the longevity of an engine, but I bet on paper its bad for the environment somehow - just like a dead 6yo car is when the oil hasn't been changed often enough!
Just look at the ford wetbelt issue. Its not ideal but regular oil changes seems to make them last longer oddly enough....

I asked my local garage to change the timing belt on my transit during its next service as it's approaching 50K miles (wet belt ) but they refuse citing they don't have the tools required for that job. Who runs a garage nowadays and doesn't have tool kits for ford engines 💩

Is there a different interval for the first service? Or has that already passed?

I know VAG commercials use different sensors to work out oil level and “quality”, but I don’t think it’s a direct oil quality sensor. Oil coming out of diesels is always black, last time I did my van it seemed quite thin, possibly because I generally only do short journeys and may be a bit diluted with diesel. It did say level was a bit high at one point.

Spiteful job.. most lads round here take it upto nearest Ford Dealer for £1500 plus vat. My garage has charged me similar for the MK8 and wife’s Ecoboom Fiesta. If I buy a Custom this year then I will have the belt changed when I buy it or as soon as it hits 50k, and then change oil every 5-10k.
Most of ours do approx 10k a year and get oil changed annually . Think the Dmax has had 4 changes in 14000 miles.
I need to relearn changing the oil myself. Always used to do own servicing but lost enthusiasm once engine bays got smaller .

Used to do all my own, then figured time better spent elsewhere so had garage do it. Just recently got back into it as I’ve noticed Labour cost creeping up when paying garage, plus the service just isn’t what it used to be. Young lads left bashing the crap out of things with no care or attention.

I've just replaced our 59 plate transit connect it had done 315,000 miles servicing wise it always had at least 3 or 4 oil changes a year since we owned it, Always an oil flush and 6 litres of oil and a filter which is not much money really, The van never gave us much trouble and the engine was still good and didn't smoke at all, We now have an 18 plate connect lets hope its as good as its predecessor.

Mazda handbook (MZR engine) gives the oil change interval as 10 000km or when the oil lever rises above the full mark.

A lot of newer stuff adjusts the service interval based on use, so quite possible lots of shorter runs could trigger it.

Dmax has same issue (not mine yet fortunately) but re gen pushes derv past work rings into sump and it has no sump overflow so too much oil = bang and ££££ Dads 16 plate has started doing it at 110K

Had my Nissan Navara from new in November 2018 and looked after and loved it with yearly oil and filter changes despite Nissan saving every 24 months

I allowed the main stealers to do the servicing to retain the 5 year warranty.
Now over 6 years old with only 38k on the clock I do the servicing in my plant workshop ;)
First thing I noticed was that the main dealers lack the skills to look after the under tray fasteners.
Some were missing while all the others had stripped threads. They obviously used a rattle gun :(
So I absolutely agree that it is so important to do regular oil changes at least once a year regardless of mileage.
Makes my brother (time served mechanic) laugh that I 'over service' all my vehicles and plant.
Now training up my 13 year old grandson t change oil without it dribbling down his arm
He's actually getting quite good at it....

So the moral of the story is - regular oil changes (y)
