I'm just at a complete loss as to talk to him. If I tell him to do something he doesn't want to do he tries to circumnavigate me and go to a director, if I raise my voice ( even to be heard over running machinery) he asks me to stop shouting. I have never shouted at him or near him. I haven't even sworn at him. I dread to think what he would react like if he heard how I get spoken to by clients and directors. Completely alienated himself from the rest of the work force as he can't take a joke, and there is a fair culture of practical jokes.
go carefull ,he is hoping you react , start with the warnings and get rid

I don't react, luckily I'm a very calm and patient person, he's employed so can't do an awful lot as he hasn't actually done anything wrong.
He will get pushed out by the others as it puts undue pressure on them. Plus his workload will grow.
Peer pressure often the best as it's soon obvious the lurker isn't pulling his weight
No win no fee leeches have a lot to answer for...need to make it harder for folk to make spurious claims imho

Unfortunately It doesn't work like that, and tbh I wouldn't of hired him in the first place, you can tell from a brief conversation what he is like. I will share my thoughts with the directors but he is making himself less popular by the day.
i know how it works ,and its wrong ,and its going to get worse on the first day of the new labour goverment

I'm ever hopeful that the lefties will push it so far that people that can or do start to attract a premium. I think it's starting to happen TBF. Whilst we complain about trades wages they are slowly creeping up in comparison to alot of industries.

We already command a premium.... but you will never get it in large complex companies.

Not really a premium when the going rate for man and machine is less than the going rate for skilled groundworker/machine driver. Yes you can earn more when carrying out jobs but realistically as an industry we are giving ourselves a pat on the back for doing better than unskilled workers.
A premium is realistically, in the grand scheme of things is what software developers and digital marketing people earn.
And whilst the tides are turning we have a long way to go to get there and I think it has to get worse before it gets better.

I don't think I am, it does I suppose depend on your viewpoint but your not going to see nationals and others individually rewarding skilled operatives or unskilled but reliable workers higher than the rest of there flocks.... We are being asked about "technicians" which would be HR speak for a plant fitter.

Private world, you can demand whichever rate you can negotiate or choose to follow..... Working for anything mid size plus your exciting HR and accountant attitudes with a disconnect between the person that understands what you contribute and the the person who looks at a spreadsheet and gets a little hurt that a lowly fitter may be rewarded slightly more than you..... And don't forget the ahem Union affect where it would be unfair for a young whiper to get paid more than old ted who's been it it 40 years and is the laziest most dower useless twat in existence and was as useless 35 years ago when he finished his apprenticeship in striking at British Leyland.

Premiums aren't there for good reliable workers in larger organisations... I'm not saying there isn't reasonable money, but it's not a premium if the comparatively dogshit bastards are on the same money as you is it?

As for the last bit reference software developers/digital marketeers etc..... I know a lass who is on a wholly unjustifiable salary..... Doing a job in sales which most of us would struggle to view as even useful let alone needed. It's certainly not essential to the modern world and ultimately is on par with the Aviva call centre worker. However because she's not in a union infested workplace and she's in a reasonable small company where she knows and has met pretty much the whole management structure she is paid incredibly well and is rewarded for her performance directly.... That is what I'm talking about...

Sorry Rory, nothing to do with viewpoint and everything to do with experience. I know of several companies, from medium, to national to multi national that all reward on an individual basis. One company that I’m well acquainted with is mostly union staff and the union hates the fact that they can’t dictate everyone’s pay.

I find it hard to imagine there is any high paid employed work. In my recent experience of employment, small companies keep you busy but pay bugger all, and Large companies pay £1 a hour more and most people sit around doing bugger all except bitching and bullying all day. Self employed is where it's at for me.

Depends where you are. Home counties then 50k a year for a groundworker is obtainable. I think it's Decent money. Not a premium when compared to other jobs but definitely a decent wage

More than half of my lads take a gross wage higher than my wage. I do get lots of fringe benefits so I’m probably mildly better off financially in the end (but I do more hours than them). I do however have much more flexibility than them and can direct my life and interests as I wish.

Paying a premium doesn't guarantee getting good people either, subbed to a company a couple of years ago who's majority of lads were lastly and effing useless. Just piss heads and what ever else, wages on a Friday, mostly gone by Monday

One of them took the piss constantly, always quoting they can't get rid of me as they can't get any lads, he eventually got fired on another job, along with his mate who just joined a couple of weeks before, as they weren't turning up on site till gone 10, hungover and doing nothing

Sometimes I think, it would be nice to have a few lads but the reality is most are not worth the hassle. It's bad enough getting labourers let alone any one decent
