Yeah, sadly that sounds all too familiar. Companies making serious money but still offering wages that barely cover the basics — and then calling it a "favour" to let you try the job at a discount rate. It’s rough.
The whole “self-employed but really employed” setup just means they dodge proper responsibilities while you carry all the risk. And in industries like heat pumps and drilling — where there's clearly money flowing — it's frustrating to see workers undervalued like that.
Totally get the “I’ll believe it when I see it” mindset. There’s so much talk about green energy creating good jobs, but the reality on the ground often looks very different.
