What are the downsides to them?

To get suspension you sacrifice some of the weight transfer ability of conventional tractors meaning draft implements are harder to pull. Also equal size wheels increase turning circle. View of implements is poor. Suspension leads to poor stability with mounted implements.
not legal on UK roads if not - or certainly used to be

I believe it has never been a rule that there has to be a physical link, it's just that there has to be a fail safe system and positive link which traditional hydraulic systems don't meet.
There are hydraulic systems that meet the specification though.
With a tractor or dumper if you turn the steering wheel to full lock you can carry on turning the wheel albeit slowly, the steering wheel position also drifts as you drive and you need to constantly readjust your hold .This is the problem I believe. The proper pumps won't allow that to happen.

Raft of electric stuff coming with fly by wire steering. Afaik they need two motors etc to meet regs.

I think it is - I’m sure that’s one of the things that always set them apart from other tractors. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Maybe, I recall someone saying about it when there was talk of MOT tests, unless its just certain models, or they where talking rubbish
I know unimogs definitely have got a direct link.
A quick google seems to say some are hydraulic steering and some of the faster ones have a steering box.

pretty sure it is a C&U requirement for road going vehicles
Tractors in general definitely don’t have a direct link (and aren’t legally allowed to go more than 20mph, which may be related?). Big self-propelled chippers also cannot possibly have a direct link as the cabs lift and rotate (and they go really fast, at least 50mph!).
Ducks are allowed on the road and they certainly don’t have a direct link either…

This is the problem with the influx of the Chinese brands, people are tempered by the cheapness but do you just pay for it when you come to sell instead.... It will take a while to change mindset over the mainstream brands when coming to resale. Interestingly my TB216 is not a machine id consider one of Takeuchis finest moments but they still hold their value well because of the Takeuchi brand behind it...

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
they'd all be defined as plant & equipment though .. not really intended for road travel
