The 2.6/2.7 for towing class is a red herring. Great if you get away with it but it's such a tight envelope. Total weight, nose weight, individual tow vehicle axle weights, individual trailer axle weights, hitches, buckets/attachments/implements, mud, fuel, other stuff on the trailer. Just too much buggeration. You might as well resticker a 3.5.
Something like 1.9-2.3 seems more realistic. I don't have the experience to say with certainty that you don't leave too much stability and power on the table but I suspect you don't. For a lot of people the ability to take more (timesaving) implements, save a trip taking stuff home etc will make up for any diminished heft.
