thank you ... makes a lot of sense ..#3, I presume, is an on/off valve to close the second side of the service off from/to tank and in single acting mode it just dumps to tank ? .. know what I'm looking for now

can see your reasoning in the additional line too Rob ... gives a direct to tank drain for motors if the m/c is not originally set up as double acting and the block is plugged as you said ... seems odd that the block should be an M20 fitting though?

Sun's out and quietly coming around onto me patch ..... couple of can you justs to attend to and let the sun get up a bit higher and onto me patch .... then I'll go take a look ......... once i get Lil Jake started and out from his hidey hole ... starts fine with a charged battery ... I just shouldn't have left it so long between start ups

Yeah the tap closes the route to tank off basically creating a double acting line.

After dealing with the usual morning 'chores' - empty Morso, lay and carry in a basket of wood for tonight, feed cats, feed me, etc. ... was faced with wrestling my ex-GPO triple extender into one of the attic traps, without fetching it earthward, so's I could stuff all the crimbo crud back up there - tree baubles, lights, etc. and all the other stuff Pam likes to 'adorn' the house with .. for it's 50 weeks 'rest' in the dark ..... head torch job, as although I have lighting installed up there, turning 'em on wakes up any flies hibernating and I get mobbed ... all re-installed, last thing 'fore battening down the hatch was smoke bomb the b'stards ... do it several times a year as we seem to have more than our fair share of the bloody things. They DO NOT like the smoke bombs and looks like the Western front afterwards .... hoover job for the corpses

and then .....
sun was out set of jump leads and a battery and Lil' Jake was purring ....

and I tracked him out and over closer to me tool 'box'
rubber floor mat took a bit more wrestling off than the last time, when it was a lot warmer, but eventually persuaded it out and popped the first half of the floor plate off..... to reveal one valve block

found the plug and then was trying to decide WTF operated the relevant slice

and eventually sussed it was one of those fancy push / pull cables ...... looked for the return line from the block, trying to spot the breaker return and hopefully a couple of tees and the valve in last night's pic....

theres the tee, but sod all else. Manual says it's behind a hole in the side panel ....

it's telling porkies ..... sod all behind that ....... 'cept the tank return line

found the block end of the cable, operating the slice... and the plug, just as Rob said ...

Breaker pedal was real stiff ... seeing as it's had virtually no use - Ollie said he'd never used it either and I deffo ain't, so pulled t'other side of the floor up, to get at the other end of said cable, to see what could be done to improve matters on the pedal front

the rubber boot was riding on the solid actuator end, so gave me some access for the WD40 .... and having gotten things a bit free-er, secured it to the outer with a couple of cable ties and then started 'pumping' the WD down the cable and working it with the pedal ...... half an hour of that and yon cable was 'sweet as' ... decided, as the sun was out and things were drying nicely to pull the cable off the floor plate and give both floor panels a good wire brushing and a coat of ali primer (have run out of HBZP grey ox.) .... the ali makes a superb primer and lasts a lot longer than grey ever does .....

pretty pitted in places, but scraped off well and the brush did the rest, ready for a good thick coat of shiny tish

and then it p*ssed down for for a quarter of an hour, just as I'm wrestling the cable back onto the floor panel ... and'd stopped by the time it'd co-operated so dropped t'other side back into place

everything in sight that moved, got lubed, whilst the floor was off and both pedals are now moving nicely ....
would've gone for the 'plug', 'fore refitting the left floor panel, but was looking 'kin grey and did not want to get lashed on again, for longer, possibly, with Lil' Jake in bits, so as said re-assembled him and parked him up ....
did have a suss, on what will be required, in the way of rubber plumbing, to get the second side of the slice, up the boom and down the dipper, to where the other half of the slice's end lives ... 12 ft of 1/2 line required, with a 90 on one end and then I'm going to need to either get a M/M from the block (M20, according to Rob) to BSP, or if there's enough 'meat' in the plug, I might be able to tap it out to 1/2" BSP and screw a M/M 1/2" adapter into it ... but will have to get it out first to see .... gonna have to slack off the front half of the slice's pipe fitting first though to swing it out the way enough to get a socket on the plug and unscrew it from the block. doesn't look an easy challenge - space-wise
based on the chances of getting another wetting this afternoon, it was a job for a.n.other day ..... but watch this space

no but I have a nice little funnel which will fit cables nicely ... fit, fill with oil and let gravity do its thing .. takes a little time - which i didn't have the other day - next time the deck is off I'll get it out and pour some more in there ... it at least actuates relatively easily now ... way better than it did ...... gonna have to go back in there to sort some plumbing

Rudely awoken at half eight by Pam... was gonna have a lie in this morning .. then up for a drugs delivery at ten. " house is cold, boiler isn't on and the (wireless) stat is showing 12.5 - set at 16 ... I haven't 'played' with it "
Hauled arse out of bed and looked at it ... it'd locked out ... press restart and the motor's buzzing, so either the pump I bought 'fore crimbo has finally seized, or the motor has. will have a look after I've had a couple of coffees and some toast ... I hope my diagnosis 'fore crimbo was right and all I have to do is fit and bleed a new pump, otherwise it's a trip to Hereford and another 200 quid for a motor ... after the delivery's been and gone.

was going to happen sometime ... better today than Tuesday .. was fit for sod all Tuesday morning and at least I will have a definitive answer now, as to what's been making the intermittent howling noise for weeks, when it starts from cold.

mission accomplished ... apologies for some of the pix quality and lack of the finished item ... wanted to get it lit .. was down to 10C in the kitchen and the catering staff weren't happy

wrestled the little b*stard out of the fire box

pulled the fuel solenoid off, disconnected the injector line, main kero feed to the pump and gave it some leccy .....

bzzzzzzzzzzzzz ..... pump off ... felt alright .... motor felt reasonable too ....
interesting push on drive sleeve (I'm pleased to say - no wrestling to disconnect) just three pinch blots holding it in place

motor fooked ... work out WTF was holding it in place ... two easily accessible screws .....
but ........ there was a fan on the other end of it and finding what held that was a lot more stripping

and the collection of bits grew

few more bits off to reveal the fan and a nice little M6 grub srcew ... which put up little resistance the fan on the shaft however required a bit more 'brute' with a knockometer, but eventually had the motor on the floor, once I'd loosened it a bit

book out to check part numbers and a call to Wolselys to confirm they still had one on the shelf - yep - my name applied to it and on the counter waiting for me to collect in an hour

Into Hereford and the guys there were well pleased to see someone with 'a book of words and pix' for reference, to be sure I was getting given the right part .. wallet 200 quid lighter and away
Called in at Locks garage on the way back for some bird nuts and fuel, went in to pay and they said " you on #3? " .. " Nah #8, 36 litres " looked out and #3 is empty ... driven off with 48 quidsworth of fuel bar stewards
they're a family run place that sell just about everything you can think of ... 7 am 'til 10 pm, seven days a week ... even still do Autogas .. anyway
back home and explore all in the box with the motor ... some I needed, some I didn't .. will come in handy for spares

got it all sussed and motor installed ...

body very slightly different - now has a machined face/shoulder and requires a spacer between the body and fan blade set, before rebuilding the fan cowling ... pump re-installed

wiring connected -- POP with dedicated plugs ... so much easier than the old Selectos screw terminals on Pam's old Worcester

and ready to get back on the floor for a re-connection of the supply, after a good clean off first .... hoovered the firebox out - pretty clean TBF - very in fact. and got it all ready to go back in ...
re-coupled the fuel line - slotted it back into the firebox and dogged it up, then hit go -- bit slow co-operating, then realised turning the kero back on was really going to help matters .. and away it went very quietly
topped up the system pressure whilst it was cold and bled off the 6ft towel rail upstairs ... system full and at pressure, and running sweet.

gathered me tools up and slotted them away in me 'house stack tool box' - saves trekking outside for the odd driver/spanner/pliers/etc. for odds an' sods ...
and ......
find a plastic 'cover' plate hiding behind the box ...
damned if I could see where it went ...
deffo an external component - clean, soot free and a slight water mark on it ..
could not recall - or see where it came from ---- 'til I looked at these pix
's not even in the exploded parts diagram ...
I'll put it on next time I have the burner out of the firebox ...
nothing critical or important, just a cover for the flying wiring, which is all safe, as is ....
and no one else'll be going in there

(Pam 'runs' hot and I just wear a sweat shirt if I find it cool - but it's fine most of the time)
and it's 'sposed to be a dry (but overcast) weekend

@V8Druid did you check capcitor readings? RDB motor virtually never fail in the way you describe, usually just bearings. Capacitors cause stalling motors and we change 100s of them.

it did occur to me -- but this is one stiff motor - can rock it back and fore to an ultra tight spot when horizontal ... in the vertical down position it's just 'dry tight' with one tighter spot.

I used to change bearings but don't bother anymore as new motor is warranted. Some engineers will rebuild them. I've got a couple dozen of those burners on shelf if you want any for play.

sounds like a cool idea ... reckon one of them, in a double drum heater 'd chuck out some heat ... could soon sort out a control system for it

So pleased that you got yer boiler burner fixed
It's basic electro-mechanical stuff that most of us can do, but always comes at the wrong time.
Up until a few years ago I was keeping our Camray II running for over 25 years with most part replaced.
It had the Riello (RDB) Mecron 3 burner. And yes I have changed ALL parts, incuding a motor over the years.
The one one is stored behind the barn as a 'come in handy' AND I still have a large box of parts for the burner
The 'new' Grant is performing well for the house.
So was thinking of covering the old Camray II to run on waste engine oil.
Have a few hundred litres here for bonfires etc
