As said before, knock the O license requirements for lorries under 13t on the head, double the Ministry testing to every 6 months and encourage ownership of small lorry's and you will instantly see a improvement in road safety with a majority of pickup and trailer and transit van overloading disappearing overnight.

The tractor question is more complicated unfortunately.

Anyone with a car license here can go and hire a tipper like this below. Even comes with a towbar to pull an extra 3.5 tonnes.
Seriously, instead of arguing endlessly about this on this forum you need to establish a relationship with a few of those in Westminster or wherever and bring them around to some sensible thinking about using trucks like we do in Australia. The efficiency gains would be phenomenal and that's the point you should be pushing. Every politician I've known loves to take on a sensible winning issue they can advocate for if someone does the work for them in setting out how the benefits would flow.

You don't even need to go as far as Australia for an example, just look at how Furniss and the French are beating you just across the channel!

And how many on this forum have tried?
Amongst the other things that fill my life I chair a local Community Consultative Body which is supported by our local council. The community comes to our meetings with issues from potholes to flooding to inappropriate development. We have a few good submission writers in our community and we also attract attendance from local Councillors and even State and Federal Government Reps. They figure if people are getting together and getting upset about something there may be votes to be won or lost. We don't win every battle but we've won quite a few which makes politicians even more nervous about ignoring us.

At a National level we have very active independent Transport groups who deal with Trucks and Transport issues. It's a big country and trucks are a big part of that and these independent groups and manufacturers have recently changed transport policy to allow wider Euro sized trucks on our roads. So now we can have access to the trucks the rest of the world has rather than expensive special build trucks 50mm narrower than the global standard.

There's a common belief in Australia that England is full of "whingeing Poms" so don't give them any more ammunition

Got a shock the other day when one of the old guys I do wind sports with rocked up with a brand new Chinese LDV high roof van

main problem, as I see it, is once these local politico types get themselves voted in, they don't GAF about who put them there .. our local MP is as much use as a chocolate tea pot, about anything of concern, no matter how big an issue it is .. he's got himself a 'comfy seat' for the umpteenth time ... as for local councillors/authorities -- they're worse and some of what they get up to is bordering on fraud/criminality in how they 'use' public funds and just do as they like, often with no idea or experience or capacity to make the decisions they arrive at.
Monmouthshire CC has spent multi millions in the last few years investing OUR money into IEs, all out of county, unoccupied, with little hope of ever being so and all vastly over-priced/valued. The funds would be better spent in county sorting infrastructure issues. Monmouthshire has one of the highest rates of council tax going, mostly spent on the wrong things.
