Taking a dump on me

Hi Guys,

Really sorry to be that guy that signs up just to ask questions but im not sure what else to do now, i feel this dumper has took a dump on me.
i just recently bought a spares or repairs 1 ton benford dumper due to money problems i couldnt afford a working one.
i fixed all the other problems but have not been successful on fixing the gearbox.

i stripped all the gearbox down as it was in a bad way, i replaced all the bearings and put it back how it came apart, but it is making some bad grinding noises when in 2nd 3rd and reverse gear. 1st gear does not sound too bad (1st gear probably normal sounding?) im pretty sure it moves in 2nd 3rd and reverse, but iv not tried for long as it sounded quite bad, so i stopped.
there is a slight noise in neutral too.

i dont know the history of the dumper as it was taken apart when i bought it, so dont know what it was like before stripping it.

i am normally mechanically minded but im not 100% confident in a gearbox as this is the first time, im not sure if worn gears etc could cause this but they seemed usable when i cleaned them and checked them out.

any help with what to look at would be great.

Thanks Dan

What was the center shaft like when you took the gearbox apart?

Which one is the centre shaft on this drawing?

Here are some pics of the shafts.
One is before i cleaned, i dont have pics of when i cleaned that shaft.
I put a bearing race sleeve on one of the shafts as it was too lose in the bearing.

I dont know if you can tell from pic, im not sure what i should of been looking for in terms of wear on the shaft and gears really.
But they seemed ok, maybe a a few millimetres of play on gears.

Also does it matter what orientation i put the gears back on? Could it be somehow out of time?
I didnt think so, and i just put on without checking for any marks.

Photo two.

Tbh packing them out is what we do, usually works. How true/aligned was the race you pushed on it.
Im fairly confident about the sleeve. It was machined down on a lathe then checked on the lathe after fitting the sleeve.

What do you think could be causing it to grind, when i jack one wheel off the ground and spin the wheel whilst in 2nd 3rd and reverse it does feel a little knotchy as if the gears are catching. Seems odd.

There's not alot on them to grind, bar the center shaft which I'd say you've sorted correctly.

Can you video the sound?

Here is a vid on youtube as I couldn’t upload vids to this forum.

First gear 👇 (a lot quieter possibly normal)

Reverse gear i think👇 (loudest)

Neutral 👇

I think first sounds normal, im not sure as iv never had a dumper before.

First is quietest, then second is louder, 3rd even louder and reverse similar to 3rd maybe a little louder than 3rd.

I'd say something is rubbing slightly. that said it's not particularly bad IMHO. They are very crude gearboxes and will make some noise.

Do you have any ideas @Mick-the-fitter ?
It sounds a lot worse when the engine is running it faster.
It sounds like the gears haven’t engaged properly but they have. 1st is ok just 2nd 3rd and reverse

I can feel a knotchy feeling when i lift the wheels off the ground and spin the wheel with my hand.

Its too loud to use really.

Selector fork rubbing at all? I’ve rebuilt afew of them now, once one part starts to wear they whole damn thing pretty much wears out at the same time!

What grade oil have you used? I'd guess the manual says 90w, but the straight cut gears might be quietened a bit with 140w.

Several gears seem to show pitted gear teeth, but that may just be sludge catching the light.

The input shaft (pic5) shows it lived a long and honorable life (and has been abused ever since).

Item 52 could be one issue, was it here a brass bush in there?

If it’s sounds better in 1st gear then the input shaft bearing is loaded up for this,(53) so you say in 3rd it’s very noisy! Did you have the lay shaft out also? (3) if the output end bearing is damaged it will make lots of noise in higher gears and reverse, as they all put load on that bearing!

Sorry just looked at your pics bearing (52) is a roller bearing it’s a later box! Have you tried the box with the prop shaft off?

A lot of the gears were pitted and worn a bit, they do have a fair bit of slop when engaged together.
I didnt think it would affect it too much… maybe i was wrong.
