The total weight (tractor + trailer) increased to 31t, but the gross weight of the trailer stayed the same at 18.29t

Exactly that - modern tractors can shift a lot more weight than they can legally move on the road (they are designed exclusively for off road use after all!).“Off road use”
There’s a local farmer with a big Valtra and massive tri-axle silage trailer that has been over a weighbridge at 66 tonnes - it’ll drag that across fields all day long.

When I worked on the land we had our own weighbridge, kept to MOT standards and bi-annual inspections. It was nice to know how illegally we were running. This was the late ‘70’s, early ‘80’s.

used to have a firm called Gwent Weighing Systems, fairly local to me .. built, installed and tested weighbridges .. used to do a lot for them with the cranes ... testing days were the easiest, craning test weights on/off their truck/bridges. .. all self contained these days with hiab handling

I know Joe quite well, used to work for his uncle. He was running a 120hp mog towing an artic trailer on a dolly for a bit, but the trailer was so heavy it used to drag him backwards down hills he was trying to drive up. Hes a grafter, but a bit of a nutter with it.

I followed a farmer the other day towing a 16ft ft double axle ifor behind his tractor, with 8 round silage bales on. 4800kg on the trailer I reckoned

In fairness I've had that happen several times towing the legal 3500kg behind a disco. Overun brakes on ifors are great untill your going uphill!

absolutely -- over run only work with weight being exerted upon the coupling linearly forward
the nutter above should have had functioning coupled stoppers ... 's people like him need the book throwing at them and then locking up ... they all seem to think it's just a huge laugh - 'til they kill or injure some one
