Not as stupid as it first sounds. Genny runs under full load then switches off rather than continually running under partial load.
It's also not all that groundbreaking an idea either but cost wise probably dearer than the diesel cost (at least back in the red days it would likely be).

We’ve been working on a Caddick site on and off this summer - when they set up their ‘proper’ site office they had a massive temporary solar array/battery/back-up generator setup in full sunshine out front - it looked impressive if I’m honest!
I went back to site a month later and it had all gone and a big traditional generator was humming away - it turned out that the solar setup was a load of crap…

There will be far more monetary incentive to that than just the diesel saving.

Yep bullsh*t publicity which is why we've seen it.

And they will tout it when applying for new contracts. They lost the Surrey highways contract to Ringway supposedly because Ringway have a couple of electric vans and kier don't have any.

I can see that working very well on some jobs.
One I had (I've referred to before), I was babysitting sewerage pumps.
Between 6pm and 10pm, the pumps ran pretty well 100%
Between 1am and 5am, the pumps ran about 20min every two hours

The 190kVA genset ran 24/7 where as with a battery, it probably could have been reduced to 8 hours.
(or substituted a 50kVA gen + battery)

Green washing is term I think. I’ve just had to go a a conference that the company running it insisted on physical presence. They go on about their green credentials and the directors run Teslas , but even though it would have been easy to have an online link to Teams or whatever they made me drive around 1000 miles and many of the guys in the room fly in. It is just an ego trip to force suppliers to do as they are told combined with pretending to be green for the publicity rather than believing it.
