Completely incorrect. Legally you need to strap or lock any arm that "Could" swing independently. The well documented case is Chepstow/Blazey Plant Hire in North Cornwall with a wheel digger.

Yes and by strapping the upper structure you are stopping the boom moving independently. Slew locks are perfectly acceptable and strapping the upper structure does exactly the same.

Not if the machine has a kingpost/boom offset though - that could theoretically still pivot into traffic if a hose burst.

Get 4 straps about 6ft long and cross strap it on both sides theres 2 more ratchets to do but it's a lot quicker than walking round to hook them on. I keep the ratchets on the lashing points when there not in use so there always to hand

This - strap the opposite lashing point on the machine to give you more strap to work with.

Sounds similar to what I do, straps off the blade eyes pulling back, and straps off the eyes by the sprocket pulling forward, the straps cross over each other in the middle.
When not using them, don't roll them up, just unhook them off the digger and hook them on the nearest lashing point on the trailer, and nip them up.

That's cleared it up no end🤣 showing my intelligence here but I have absolutely no idea what any of you are on about!

Can you get to the sides of the undercarriage?
My 8026 and dx10 both have lashing points on the sides (dx10 is one on blade and one near final drive)

IIRC and I'm sure @JD450A will correct it, you have to restrain 100% of load from moving forward, 50% from moving either side or backwards but there is no requirement for any restraint downwards.
So if this is the case, nothing wrong with cutting an 8x8" block of wood to trap between the blade and the headboard of the trailer and slapping a ratchet across the tracks just under the kingpost where it's easy to tighten up and then one over the bucket...

From memory its similar, I think it's higher than that.

FYI storrsy is bang on. Butting the machine against the headboard so it cannot move forwards is perfectly acceptable. Infact it's the preferred method.
I also know cases have been dropped regarding excavators in closed RORO bins on the basis that the bin is more than designed to prevent that weight falling out or breaking the sides.
Sadly the entire shabang is a PITA lead by the unknowing.

Is that the cat 428 where the arm swung out?

was a BHL for sure ..... I remember it well ..... that is some time ago
If it is the 428, it wasn't just a case of the arm accidently swinging out.
It had a flat battery and the machine was started and left running on the loader, the battery cover had been chucked in the cab for safe keeping. The battery cover moved, hit the stick and out she went.

From memory it's as you say, 100% forwards, and 50% side to side and back.
2 main types of lashing, direct lashing machine to trailer stopping movement in all directions, and over the top, which basically pulls the load down increasing friction, stopping it moving, but different factors take place when working out how many straps are needed, coefficient of friction between load and deck, angle of the ratchet straps, weight of load and capacity of straps.

That's the one, Key findings where that the machines transport locks were not in and it wasn't chained. Would it of made a difference? Perhaps not, but it could potentially of saved lives.

Noticed the utilities lads round here seem to be having a competition who can strap the machine the highest ... regularly see straps going up and through cab rops. Once over the top of Florida which was impressive 👌 weather there's some new bulletin f knows but 🤔😖🫣

They don't use straps round here. All the utilities use diggaloc's. Must be cheaper in the long run. 1.5t machines never have anywhere decent to strap down and always end up chewing up straps.

Probably because it will tick a safety officers box. How can we make sure the lads have the machines correctly restrained as some are clueless….just make it so they can’t do it wrong!
