I made one for a pal of mine but used the dipper pin hole as the same pivot as the thumb and it tucks up tight to the dipper when not in use, going to make one for my little komatsu when I get some time and the machine is back in the yard
very useful if you don’t have a dedicated grab

It's been asked before I guess ..but why oh why does every USA machine have a thumb and yet we still piss about with buckets only....?

I have the RSL one. It's quite narrow so never have to take it off. Same width as dipper. It folds back neatly. I use it all the time. Today just try using your hand without the thumb, then you will see how well you do without it. It's just the same with a digger

Thing is grabs are great for dedicated handling tasks as have the articulation of the bucket ram and if your into stacking timber all day then clearly a rotator is going to be more efficient too. But the thumb for what it cost £600-£1000 for a small machine, is there when you need it, always on the machine so no extra attachments to cart around, they work splendidly with the bucket and maybe it's just the type of work I do but I find I always need the bucket for digging stumps, rocks , raking brash, it just makes more sense to have the thumb to move it all around as I go along rather than swapping around with a grab all the time.I made one for a pal of mine but used the dipper pin hole as the same pivot as the thumb and it tucks up tight to the dipper when not in use, going to make one for my little komatsu when I get some time and the machine is back in the yard

Even something as trivial as loading buckets into the back of the truck or picking something out of a dumper.

I put a manual Digbits thumb on my Kx71-3 before the Engcon. I wished i had gone for the hydraulic version very shortly after fitting it. Very very useful addition.
Since the Engcon my need for it has reduced but it still come out when dealing with trees, bush and general waste!!

I`ve not found any disadvantage of having it fitted, other than a little bit of extra weigh on the end of the dipper.
I`m only a partial fool, because mines not hydraulic

I had one on my 5.5 ton for 5 years took it off as I bought a selector grab, miss having it so bought another one haha.
The grab is great but if it’s not within reach or your loading buckets onto trailer etc so handy, or picking up brash etc they are great just get in the way sometime and more weight on the arm.

Some people (and not suggesting for a moment you) manage to f**k up the installation of a thumb. I've useda few on customers machines that have been awful. Not closing properly against the dipper because they've messes up the spacings of the two brackets and the ram closes before the thumb is against the dipper etc Or not meeting up with the bucket properly..
