What size digger will lift a 1 ton bag?

Hi all. I'm trying to spec a digger to buy for a long self build project. I'm currently looking at ay JCB 8018 CST or a Hitachi Zx17

Does anyone know if either of these will lift / unload / move around a 1 ton builders bag? I'm trying to workout if its worth going for an older bigger machine (2.5 - 3.0 t) or whether to stick with a smaller machine with less hours etc.

I only have a £10K budget some am looking for as much advice as i can from your guys experience.

I don’t think any of the 1.5-1.9 machines will lift a well filled bulk bag, and not sure a 2.5-3t will do it well either.

No chance, a 2.7t might but not if it’s wet and it sure wouldn’t unload it from a trailer.

A takeuchi tb145 will and I can't remember if it was an ex40 or ex45 hitachi will too. As said above more suited to 5t+ class. There was a 5t 2018 Sany with around 1000hours for 13.5k at euro auctions today.

Even the cheapest crappiest 1.5t forklift will throw 1t bags about with ease. Right tool for the job.

assuming you have solid enough terrain to move about on ...... do not underestimate the ability of even a 1.5t FLT to get it arse bogged in what looks like decent ground ... empty, all the weight is on the two back wheels (usually the smallest ones) -- want good ground to use a conventional FLT on ... and you'll pay roughly the same for a 2-2.5 as a decent 1.5'll cost you - get about better (bigger wheels) and have far more capabilities

Sorry you are correct but I'm fed up of seeing folk piss about trying to shift stuff with diggers...

A 2.8t will just about do it. But real world usability will be crap- think lifting of the back of trailers etc. 5 ton minimum and even then you'll have to be on the ball. To actually lift anything to a useful height it will mostly be at the far reach. 8 ton to lift it comfortably at far reach IMO

I have a bracket for a manual thing on my Kx71-3. It is very useful for hanging a short chain from and handling bulk bags. Can get bull bags off the rear of the plant trailer and over the side of very careful. I drop the bucket off when lifting bulk bags as it is on the edge!!

Yes I used to do similar before I fitted the thumb- like this- gives a useful bit of height and capacity. Tracked 27 bags down a path like this.

If it's a self build and your not needing to transport it you might be worth looking at the 3.5t sort of size. Generally more metal for your money than anything towable but also should be able to lift dumpy bags around the place if your carefull about it.

for moving them around a 3ton dumper with the right bit of steel will pick them up and move them anywhere you can get the dumper
