Reality is very unlikely someone going to feck around importing a used machine without going looking and having some linkup and prices are strong over there so easier just to source one local without £5k transport costs

It can work out sometimes. First machine I owned was a hitachi ex100wd imported from Finland . It was a great machine .

I had as ex100-5 and ex120-5, both grey imports that we had CE marked. I would doubt most clients would have a clue!!
From memory, it wasn’t illegal to import them back them, both I seem to think somewhere in health and safety guidance you needed a CE mark on be able to use them.

there must be thousands of pieces of equipment of all sorts floating about without CE markings, which only came in in '93/'96 ...... makes no odds to their functionality, much like a 'go faster stripe'

Would say it more the emissions as bet most of the machine is same as a ce marked machine

Don't waste your money buying one of those non CE marked machines... there cheap for a reason. Probably a grand machine with minimal electrical components.... but they are for the Asian Market. You basically won't legally be able to use it in the UK. I think the Law states that you can use it yourself buy the second you ask anyone else to use it your breaking the law.
We got trained to do the lower and puwer inspections this year and they were adamant if it does not have a CE plate.... walk away

you miss my point Stu, if it was made pre '96, CE didn't exist anyway and there's plenty of that age kit knocking about, out there ... not just diggers, but all sorts of equipment, including vehicles

I think the thing to remember is the older grey import machines (non ce or even before ce existed) were at the time equal to or even superior to what was being sold here. These asian/indian market machines are built to a lower spec than the older grey import machines so if you think you'll be buying a new machine from the good old days before they got complicated think again.

It may be different for machines before this date.... but basically any machine sold/produced after this date must have CE marking

There was a 5 ton Volvo doing the rounds about a year ago, a dealer had it for sale, it was cheap! A few weeks later a contractor in Scotland was selling in, pictures were from a job site. My guess (and its only a guess) would be that it was not aloud to work, or insurance wouldn't cover it etc.

What do you think is the actual difference between one of these and an actual hitachi zx 70/80 apart from the fact it’s built in India as a fitter that works on them ? What would you expect to be physically not as good?

but they are Hitachi ... just built under a JV agreement between Tata and Hitachi, in a different part of the world .... Hitachi would've sued their arses off for using their name long ago, if that weren't the case .... Much like Sumitomo/JCB JV, Atlas/Terex and dare say there are many more examples . Can be damned sure Hitachi would NOT put their name to an inferior product and jeopardise their outstanding reputation for build quality and longevity.

They might have a lower hp engine and smaller hyd pump etc so may fall well short of expectation.
