I've also looked at the motor/gearbox combinations at the bearing factors and wondered about making my own.
I see that Craig at West country welding has put the price up of his Sir Meccanica up by a grand to £21K
Is it worth buying well known big brand ......does it reflect in the hourly rate the customer will stomach ?
I see that no one leapt to answer justmes question

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
line boring (and bore filling) is never going to be cheap ... the kit is NOT cheap to start with and is time consuming, mostly on the set up, then the wait whilst it does its thing .....Looks good

It's a lovely weld, but it 'ain't that easy to setup a robot. The first weld doesn't look that good. You've been welding so long you probably can't remember not being able to weld.nice weld
Some time ago, I was handed a Kawasaki arm, a 400A OTC welder and a pile of manuals and told to make it work. You don't realise how much you rely on the sound and sight of the weld to fine tune your speed and angle until you've hit the go button on a new program and are no longer in control.

Used a straight line cutter (pug) that I picked out of the scrap pile a week earlier and substituted the welder in place of the nozzle
Had to build up 1-10mm of worn away material
