A Pain in the hole, but easy enough to do and sort.
Reality is it's easy, Bar fiddling with wheelbase thanks to a couple of Beavertail Hiabs that decided to split in the chassis in the 2000's and transpired to be stretched tractor units.

I would have thought you would have to pick and choose the base vehicle very carefully if you want to just adapt the body. Some of the flat beds are so lightweight they really wouldn't take kindly to machinery sitting on them. I've heard a few stories of the export crowd loading up flatbeds with kit and making a right mess including a 13 tonner ending up sat on the wheels of the lorry.

Friend of mine shortened this 18t ex-fridge lorry (sold due to London LEZ) and built a tipper. Can’t imagine he did any paperwork

Shortening doesn't require the paperwork that lengthening does.
All you do is unbolt everything and bolt it back on further forwards and cut the excess off the back.
Some makes even have all the holes pre drilled for different wheelbase lengths. So there isn't the chance of failure that comes when welding a new section in.

We used to use Staceys to shift the larger Long reaches. Never went as far as Reading, mostly Summerleazes stuff and Harleyfords.

Bit more time tonight browsing potential wagons ... seems that merc I have my eye on is quite small engine wise at 6.2l and 290hp - lots of the 19t seem to have around 10l 380hp spec
Whats people's thoughts with the 8.3t digger and buckets and some shite it will be up at its 19t, I know it's about torque but power to weight it will be well below my 7.5t running full.

Well I drive an 18 ton iveco 180e25 so she’s only 250hp and a 6litre engine and I tow a 9ton plant trailer with a 4 ton mini digger so empty weight lorry and trailer is 17.5 ton with a 28ton GTW. Pulls fine to be honest won’t win any races but plods on the best even at 28ton gross..

Other thing to consider is weight, the small engine will weight less, not much, but if your close to the limit a few hundred kilos can be the difference.
Guessing your only traveling reasonable local, an an hour or so?
290hp in a four wheeler should be ample.

Yes we have a 45min sort of limit radius wise and its rarely over 30mins.

We still have a man 280bhp 4 wheel 18t tipper and same motor in a 6 wheeler man
The 4 wheeler goes like a scolded cat

Most 18t here are 220 to 250 bhp with 6 speed boxes. You do see the odd 300bhp usually with 8 speed 4over4 box but very rare.
Is the merc your looking at an 8 speed all across box?
