Yeah, ok this lad is sound he works hard and 90 percent of the time is a good lad. We had issues but then who doesn’t. I can’t do the work van thing as he has crashed twice in two years. Luckily with insurance. His insurance is now circa 3k a year and he has probably had 4 policy’s this year where he has taken it out and then not paid them. It really gets me as I don’t pay minimum wage. To add to the story they live in council accommodation and she is a single mum ..............so rent free etc they have a better income than most he told me she gets about 800 a month in benifits. I mean just wtf

he basically has no petrol money to get to work. However he’s uninsured anyway so go figure. I will see if and when he turns up next ( he’s already text to say Monday maybe ) and see what we can do.

mans yes @JD450A is spot on

Works MOPED :)

If he’s really worth keeping, could you get another lad to pick him up in the morning? Obviously you’d have to pay that lad something extra, and he’d have to agree to it, but could be an option?

You would have to rely on 2 numpties then🤣🤣
I Built a large battery hen house for farmer a long time ago(since converted it to barn eggs) he supplied labourers I had one lad for a time who was good ,then he said one day got another coming tomorrow so had 2 lads next day farmer come along I siad bloodly lads stood talking all day .He said do you know the mathematics of boys 1 boys a boy, 2 boys half a boy, 3 boys no boy.
One day lad never turned up next day I said what happen yesterday he said nothing just wanted a day off two days later police from kent turned up he had done armed robbery with another man in Kent ,so off to jail he come out a druggy

Dont think thats 100% true - they may have different priorities in life, it could happen you work for someone else even if you are capable of running your own show, would be a decent decision to find a good boss, work hard and get looked after, even after 17 years on my own it sounds like a good idea many a time  .... esp back end
I'd agree Kev .... self employment gave me a lot ...... but it came at a very significant cost, at times ... and you NEVER switch off, EVER:(

That is very very true, nice to hear it from someone else though Gra, been a few times where I’ve questioned myself whether I’m doing the right thing and, am I in the wrong for not switching off?? trying to explain to the other half that this is a 5 to 9 job not a 9 to 5 is like talking to a brick wall🤔...........or your neighbour😂

not alone there Boyo ..... many a time I've thought how simple life would be doing summat you could walk away from every evening.
Severe costs to being self employed ... and I do not mean monetary .... your life is never your own.
yes there are/were 'perks' occasionally, but you've a thousand bosses to keep happy and satisfied. .....
Ive done many a 36 hr stint to get a job out on time ... or turned out for Plod at two in the morning with a crane .. then get back in time to open up and do a usual 12hr day ... or had to cancel personal plans, 'cos someone's let me down and it's gotta be done :(
time again .. I really don't know if it'd be the same TBH ... but have had some great times too and what price job satisfaction, when everything's cruising along

I hated having a “proper” job, but as you say the downsides of running your own show are huge amounts of stress and having trouble ever switching off. Overall I would much rather be master of my own destiny (as much as is possible), but when things go wrong it would be nice to look round at others and say “It’s broke, what shall we do?”
Nice to have a regular pay cheque each month regardless of what you have done as well.

That feeling is the same here it’s why I bought a bloody canal boat. Trying to escape because it does not stop ever.
Funnily enough, a friend of mine many years ago, bought one of those for exactly the same reason.

My greatest stresses were the 'unseen' costs from all the parasites .. rates-a grand a month .. ins.s - 2+k a month at one time... maintenance costs on everything ... the list was endless, before you even tried to earn it !!
