uninsured drivers

I have a question...


I found out one of my lads that works for me has decided not to pay his car insurance and as such his car is showing uninsured.

He asked for early wages / a lend yesterday for fuel .... would you have give it to him.

I didn’t and said i would rather he didn’t come in as i don’t want it on my conscience. If he can borrow it elsewhere then whatever but I won’t be funding it. Alas he’s not in today which is a problem for me also.

Car insurance is horrendous for young lads. 2-3k a year. If you're sure he's not spending it on drugs etc instead, and he's otherwise a good worker, then I'd offer to ararnge and pay his insurance monthly and take it from his wages. If he leaves, just stop paying and he will then be uninsured again.

Sadly I kind of did this a while ago (same lad) we paid his first payment so he was insured as he had done the same thing. Two months later we had over 3k come out of my credit card... Because he didn’t pay it. The terms of most insurance now is that they will charge the card if you don’t pay.. I did get a chargeback as I never authorised it.

used to do a similar thing for some of my guys .. and subtract / stop from their wages ....was a lot less hassle than having them not turn up .... have to keep a sharp eye on it all though
always told 'em to come to me if they had issues/problems like that ..... so much better than struggling without them, for whatever reason.

money management Ross .... I'll bet he found/finds it for his phone/fags/beer/whatever ... a lack of priority probably, sadly .. ...

yes ins. is dear, but not a lot worse (if at all) than when I was young ... was a very big chunk of bucks ... proportionally speaking, to your wage
... just that everything is bigger numbers now

can see where your coming from ... and if it's happening month on month, could be time to be looking for a more reliable employee

Difficult decision, if they are a good worker and you want to help them out, then as others have suggested pay insurance for him on a monthly basis and deduct from wages with prior agreement from both parties. The fact they didn't show up this morning maybe tells you something? I would have tried to get a lift from parents or friends if I was stuck.

I think you'll have a gut instinct as to whether or not you made the right decision...

Thanks All i always try and help the lads life isnt so easy for some. Do your best for them without actually doing it yourself at 25 years old you would think they know how to adult.. as somebody said money for fags or whatever is probably there.

Tricky one, chap who works for me is always skint, 46 yrs old, when I first took him on fortnightly payments were agreed then started to ask if he could have that weeks pay early then went back to fortnightly payments then back asking for the weeks pay again, in the end I stuck to weekly payments, there are days which I question why I bother to keep him on as he lacks drive and if left on his own the output of work drops, feels as if I'm working at 130% while he's stuck at 70% if I got rid of him the next one could be worse, the amount of horror stories about s**t men makes me hang on to him.
I'm away for a few days and stupidly? I've paid him half a shift a day to sit at home for 3 days, hopefully my decency will pay off but I doubt it, he is a pleasant bloke to work with but I do feel sometimes I'm working for him

aye ...... often the better the devil you know ... and try to drive them on some ....
not always possible with some though and no matter how hard the decision, if they ain't 'team players' / earning their corn or whatever ... it's cheaper to bite the bullet, sooner rather than later, than kick yourself at a later date for not doing it ... Sadly though, very few people will perform to expectations, it seems ... was very lucky (read 'selective') with 99% of my guys and they very often weeded out any dross that did slip the net ... they wouldn't tolerate carrying anyone, fair play ... I had a great bunch of blokes

Personal opinion is you need to decide how much of a valuable asset he is to your company.... if he's worth keeping then tell him you will give him a company van, at a cost to his wage packet...... If not then cut him loose!

No point beating around the bush.... as the old adage goes. If they are any f****ng good they are working for themselves.

Been looking on and off for a decent apprentice/hand/labourer come dumper driver for f****ng ages.... burned through a lot on a weeks trial. Simple criteria.

1. Must be prepared to work when required
2. Must be capable of surviving 4 hours without speaking to or seeing girlfreind
3. Must have mode of transport and be able to actually turn up
4. Must know how to shut the f**k up around the customer
5. Brain is required....

Amazingly it's number 2 that creates the biggest issue I've given up looking now, we've 5 machines and with some effort and a brain we could of stuck one out on a semi permanent hire... But i'll be f***ed if I can be asked now. £12 a hour and a works pickup for a donkey that can just about pilot a dumper seemed a sensible rate compared to the gardeners locally that pay £7hr and expect there monkeys to get themselves from A-B..... But no one wants to graft....


R.E works van.... Sometimes it's a necessary evil and tbh it's not that expensive... Your solving any automotive excuse off the bat, you also kill the moaning about being asked to go from A-B on errands. Knock £3-5 off the rate your paying em to cover it....

I'd hate to think I'm paying for someone else's run to the shops in the evening or off to help a mate move house at the weekend. Maybe I'm just to grippet.

Got to see it as payment rather than your cost. The right employee will value it.... Plus clause it in your contract with them and when they f**k up and crash outside of permitted use it's there issue not yours.

Key thing is not to go giving a fuel card!

Yeah, ok this lad is sound he works hard and 90 percent of the time is a good lad. We had issues but then who doesn’t. I can’t do the work van thing as he has crashed twice in two years. Luckily with insurance. His insurance is now circa 3k a year and he has probably had 4 policy’s this year where he has taken it out and then not paid them. It really gets me as I don’t pay minimum wage. To add to the story they live in council accommodation and she is a single mum ..............so rent free etc they have a better income than most he told me she gets about 800 a month in benifits. I mean just wtf

he basically has no petrol money to get to work. However he’s uninsured anyway so go figure. I will see if and when he turns up next ( he’s already text to say Monday maybe ) and see what we can do.

Dont think thats 100% true - they may have different priorities in life, it could happen you work for someone else even if you are capable of running your own show, would be a decent decision to find a good boss, work hard and get looked after, even after 17 years on my own it sounds like a good idea many a time .... esp back end
