Not carbon - the piston metal has 'flowed' leaving that impression.
The marks that look like cracks ... are in fact cracks.

must've gotten incredibly hot to do that :oops::oops::oops: .. was it still running?? timing out??
so what head was on it to leave those marks, un-aligned with the current set up ???

What I know is fairly limited. The car belongs to a mates son who hasn't owned it for long.
Fluids and timing belt were replaced soon after purchace - everything measured fine.
Everything seemed ok ... until it didn't
Dropping the sump showed big-end #4 had slop measured in mm, but the timing was spot on.
Skipping ahead, the big-ends and mains are both 0.010" undersize and the pistons are 0.020" over.
So it looks like somone stuffed a rebuild, patched it and flogged it off hoping it'd be out of sight when it dropped it's bundle.

I think the deformation was brute force rather than heat. The engine was still running, but went from "normal" to "can't ignore" over 50km - on the freeway anfter a weekend away in the bush.

I've never been inside a 300tdi, but this valve looks ok to me. Confident it "wasn't there at the time"

but that's recessed into the head/combustion chamber .. HTF could that come into contact with pistons unless timing was out and it was turned over (probably on the end of a tow rope in desperation when it wouldn't start) :(

My theory (I've never actually seen the car) is that the current valves and possibly the head) were not present when the sins were commited.
The exhaust valve has no circular marks to leave those witness marks, so the engine has been reworked since the damage was done.
As per most engines, the intake valves are larger than the exhausts - I've wondered if the engine was rebuilt using two sets of intake valves (which wouuld sit proud in the exhaust ports).

Clearly someone needs to be beaten with a camshaft over this.

I'd see the grooves as bonus you've actually got more CC now 😂
but lowered compression ratio (greater unswept volume - CR is swept volume, divided by unswept volume) ;)

That's the first thought, but all four pistons show the same damage - is that notmal for a 300tdi?

I'm told there are four head gaskets available for the 300tdi to compensate for machining tolerances (and piston damage).
