Does it work out more cost effective for you to mix yourself vs getting it delivered?

For a couple of cube yes. It’s all part load charges, delivery charges and £160 a cube round here.

We are in an awkward place right at the edge of the radius for the big three concrete companies. They’ll do a full volumetric no hassle but not keen on anything less.

Most of our work is five miles from base, and this only two miles so it’s no trouble. The guys kept mixing, raking and tamping and I just brought out a truck to swap every time they called me. Inbetween loads I had plenty to get on with at the yard.

The way I look at it, by the time you’ve set the forms, waited for the concrete (cause you dont want to order it for too early and not be ready!) and then tamped it off it’s a minimum of half a day and we all know you have to charge a day if it’s a half day.

I would say it’s around the same cost but the hassle savings are where it’s at. Having complete control of the job.

Exactly my thoughts on the pan mixer slightly cheaper but when your ready for it you can mix.
We seem to be getting a much nicer mix with it too

was just going by the footprint -- well within the 30m2 for a permitted job

It depends on the ballast used. We can not get a finish on home mixed concrete anywhere near as nice as delivered in. I can only pressume it due to the ballast that is supplied having very course sand in comparison to the fine sand that comes on the volumetrics.
When putting gullies in pads I like to put kforms around the gully poor the pad then do a a home mix at a later date to infill between the pad and the gully. But the cab never match the finish.

Volumetrics down here use 20 clean in one bin and 0-4mm granite quarry dust

Can you not collect from the concrete plant? I collect anything over .5m3 straight into the trailer job done, collected .5m3 of C35 on Tuesday £66 including vat

Collect is ok if plant is near and you don't mind it dry. Its not difficult to get a consistent mix through a mixer as long you can count what you put in.

Quantity and strength of cement in readymix is often underestimated. There's more in there than most think and its stronger cement than what you get in a bag as a rule.

I don't think it's the cement. This is what I mean the stuff we made in the middle is really grainy when trying to brush it it just flicks up. As opposed to the stuff from the volumetric round the outside that that had nice crisp lines

Can be all of it tbh. You probably don't use as much cement and if ballast you use for your own mix is from builders merchant then as you say you're at the mercy of what they buy in. I guess you are on a lot more recycled agg and dredged sand.
Lucky here I can get sand and stone from the same quarries that supply the readymix outfits but even then outva small mixer it's not the same (poss down to being shy with cement). 6m3 drum does a hell of a job of mixing it mind I think you have to factor that in.

also its more often mixed for much longer ,with all mixes the longer its in the mixer the better it is
