Different levels/Frequency of Vibration...... the Vibration is what "Compacts" the material.... as opposed to the weight. That's why a 100kg wacker will pack in the gear tighter than a 3000kg digger...... Ped Rollers are for Tarmacking,,,, Beyond that Pfft.

Personally any wacker bigger than the Belle Minipave will pack it in..... I'm not sure why but we have never had any luck with the Belles. The Bomag 10/30 seems to be a identical sized machine but is twice as good.
Worth remembering that there is a big difference between compaction and consolidation. The Latter being entirely dependant on moisture content.

Mine does a fine job ... would like a bigger one, but what I have has done me well and is easy enough to get into all but the tightest of spots or corners (y)

That's only half true. The vibrations reduce the friction between the particles allowing the weight to compact it.

The little orange belles have a really really low static pressure. They are utterly pointless on tarmac. Can't even get a good looking finish with them let alone a proper consolidation. The bigger bomag single direction plate are really good put everything down well and are big enough to get over everything at a decent rate. I would happily do upto about 20m² of tarmac with a bomag rather than drag a ped roller around.
The frequency on some ped rollers doesn't seem to agree with aggregate.

My pedestrian roller will fit on the ifor plant with the 1.8tonner so makes it very convenient to get something on the job thats quicker than a Wacker and IMO leaves a tidier finish on footpaths and the like. An 80 ride on is certainly easier being a ride on but covers not much bigger area in a pass and requires a seperate trailer.

Here is the compaction chart from hauc spec. This is about the best reference to compaction rates that is commonly published

This is the link if anyone wants it. Plenty of info on all this stuff and the by the book way of doing it including correct moisture contents and compaction rates.

Another thing, some applications can get away with just being consolidated (unbound footpaths etc) whereas others full compaction is more essential- patio bases etc where the job will fail if further settlement happens.
