Semi chisel picco is ideal for most of my work, which is stuff like 12” birch on ironstone sand. The reason I only run a small saw most of the time is that I only make a few cuts, the digger does the rest. An MS261 is ideal to lift out of the holster on the digger repeatedly without getting knackered. View attachment 84671

Is alright your still a step up from me. Ive become so lazy I can't even be arsed to sharpen chains for my Makita cordless saw. Just stick a new one on periodically and try not to hit anything in the meantime

It went in ok but the bottom of the pond was too soft- with the bucket flat giving flotation you could get on it but tracks sunk enough to make life interesting when crowding the bucket. Tried scooting around the firmer edges but not practical when I could just get the digger in there and pile it up.

I was too embarrassed to take pics of my pond problems today. Happy to report the digger is out of the slop that I got too close too!!

Dong worry @HuntingHicap , the ms462 is full chisel! Won’t last long in these sandy conditions though, lots of sparks as I go….

Speaking of semi chisel, anyone want to pick fault with the chips from the picco chains I did yesterday? Got the side cover for the echo 501 last night and thought I’d give it a run in the smaller stuff…

Im the same never been taught or learnt anything about sharpening chainsaws. Just stick a new one on. And here is @doobin Judging the chips that come off his chainsaw . There is a guy 30mins or so away that sharpens them dead cheap but not worth the drive for handful of times I use mine.

Nothing for odd jobs. Most people will have a dominant arm though which will lead to inconsistencies. I know I do- on the left hand cutters I often find that I see a slight curve in the tip plate angle being corrected when I machine sharpen a chain I’ve done by hand in the field a couple of times.

Personally I like to stick a sharp chain on and sharpen a dozen at a time, only takes a couple of minutes per chain and gets you a factory finish- when done properly. It’s next to impossible to correct a badly nicked chain bending down over a stump- yet plenty try.

There’s a lot of s**t talked about things like grinders blueing chains or Screwfix flap wheels being the best thing for sharpening mower blades, and it can all be avoided by taking the time to learn even the basics about abrasives.
