on another note ..... we'll just have to import yet more ....... the restoratons so far have returned what used to be total eyesores of mine tips to green hillsides again ..... does it really matter if it occurs this year or next FFS ... so just bury what's not yet been extracted

Saw that ... from the time I went there you could just open cast the whole place FFS. Who'd even know.

absolutely ...
there is so much coal laying about, already extracted, from old mining activities, you could spend years washing it and recovering it.
I spent a couple of months on Viponds mine, Talywain, old site, early 80s, erecting a washery, with my crane, for the tips there ..... the recovery rate was 90% from the tips :oops: ... in the days of that drift mine, if it wasn't in lumps, it just got tipped :(

It will just move the carbon footprint elsewhere, the greenwash will say how wonderful it is reducing it, when it will increase the inpact, dug in counties that done give one about emmisions, then transport here.
Tata Port Talbot will need more, because of poor quality imported coal, next thing not viable to carry one, greenwash claim a victory, we rely on countries that done give one for steel, have us over a barrel and worst still for the enviroment. :rolleyes:

i was told (dont know if true )that if oil reached 40 dollars a barrel ,all the spoil heaps would be worth going thru to recover the small bits of coal ,? as they only kept the big bits

was very profitable at Vipond's in the 80, s ... bet it's even more so now ......" the recovery rate was 90% from the tips "

Pondering it today when I saw a aggregates concrete truck "eco Crete" or some other bullshit...I mean how deluded to actually look at a 21t mixer and now think AHH all good it's now eco friendly...🤦‍♂️ Do I blame the company ...no they've no option probably or some eco looney client won't buy their mix.

It's smarter than that. They charge you a premium and then just use cheaper recycled aggregate.
Truly awful stuff especially when someone has smuggle a load of thermalite blocks into the crusher pile 👎

I’ve been noticing this recently , from plumbers to laundrettes and engineering company’s and quarries . All ecoor green this and that with a happy tree hugging slogan to go with it

It's depends on the company. Day aggregates do 2 different eco blend products, and they really high quality. We have had tens of thousands of tonnes from them always perfect.
But another company a bit south of us is usually a mixed bag, can get anything turn up.
The recycled concrete we had turn up was absolutely appalling. It was brown and sticky the bits of thermalite blocks tried to float. Chunks of 2x4 and bits of plywood in it and little squares of dpm floating around. I sat there for hours waiting to bull float it and it just wouldn't work.

Yes the complte lunacy of the Net Zero brigade continues. The latest paper from Government-funded U.K. FIRES (which actually came out at the end of last year but I missed it) looks to “minimise new construction”, and notes the shape of the urban environment will change, allowing for “denser living and reduced transport needs”.

U.K. FIRES sees the future of construction based on stone, earth and timber, along with components “reused and repurposed” from demolition. Recycled steel, cement and bricks can be used, although this will be “constrained” – rationed might be a better word – by a supply of “non-emitting electricity under high demand”. Transformational construction changes will take longer to achieve, state the authors, but the U.K.’s ambitious target of a 45% reduction in emissions by 2030, “can only be achieved through reduced material demand”.

Building without bricks is an interesting suggestion and over two billion are currently produced each year. But bricks require high firing temperatures, and the enormous cost of Net Zero energy makes them uneconomic to produce. Cement also requires energy to make but it can be mixed with calcined clay. Nevertheless, calcined clay is also energy intensive and can only supplement 50% of Portland cement. “As a result, the mass low-cost consumption of concrete will no longer exist,” the authors note. Together, bricks and cement generate annual turnover of over £10 billion. Rammed earth, which can be used for foundation screeds and walls, is said to be a proven and potentially zero emission alternative, “which can utilise abundant local materials”.

Glass looks to be a complete no-no, with production requiring temperatures of 1,700°C and producing additional process emissions which cannot be avoided by electrification. Only recycled glass seems to be acceptable for the absolutist authors, so the need for complete circularity, “will somewhat constrain the supply of glass”. However, add the authors helpfully, this will “encourage direct re-use and reconditioning of glass panels from demolition sites”.

Steel is widely used in modern construction due to its large load-bearing properties. Around the world, recycled steel accounts for about a third of current production. To have zero emissions from producing steel relies on energy-intensive carbon capture and storage technology, which the authors observe, with their customary honesty, “is unlikely to be economical by 2050”. In the U.K., 85% of steel is already recycled, and it is explained that the Net Zero transition will heavily restrict its supply. Recycling of aluminium is said to be the “preferred zero emission compatible pathway”, and this will lead to “higher prices due to a restricted supply of the material”.

Timber is also constrained by carbon emission production processes, and sustainable supply is limited by forests unable to rapidly match increased demand. The construction industry accounts for a seventh of all plastics used in the U.K., but needless to say, there are problems. Although plastics play a vital part in insulating buildings – plastic doors and windows can be sealed much more effectively than wood – the authors note that they will become “increasingly constrained and expensive to produce”.

The madness continues but war, of course (because of the money to be made) still remains legal. The world is now truly bonkers.
