Truck drivers....no wonder there's a shortage ....heard lass behind me at hospital talking about her lad getting a new job as gate guy at big bypass project .. £16 an hour "all he does is open and close gates" .

Rory's bang on....from this crowing twitter post no where does it state the vehicle was thoroughly checked etc etc ..it was a "oh you no tarp" crack on lad style check imo.

New house building site been cleared this week...steady stream of nh and claas with dump trailers leaving ... seriously tell me that's all legit...
And yet if my cousin gets caught doing a favour with a couple of pallets on an empty run back from down south he's fkked. Htf can that be right.
blood wrong isn't it
Rory as usual is absolutely spot on .. without the drivers flaunting it the traccies'd be on the fields

As for the new housing site ... I'm sure DVSA'd love to hear about it ... especially if the easy nick was explained to them clearly

what was your cousin driving?

A Farmer got sent down other day for a crash, he wasn’t driving but one of his employees was, his fastrac lost its brakes, crushed a car killer someone. Ran a haulage business along side so knew exactly what he was doing! Not sure what the driver got. Tractor hadn’t had full service in 6 years ffs 🤦
hopefully for a long time .... he really knew it was wrong

agreed but ... if these 'drivers' grew some and started dobbing these ar*e holes into DVSA , who could then nail them to the wall, things would change ... word would soon get around after DVSA prohibited a few from leaving their yards .. or simply impounded them the moment they set tyre on the black top
as long as these ppl ('drivers') continue to plead ignorance / ignore what they know to be wrong, it will be self perpetuating
we're not talking about HGVs here, but ppl running illegal ag type set ups, on work they know doesn't qualify, with rebated fuel, no VED, testing of equipment and cheapo spotty oik teens at the wheel (with possibly no idea) nor care, for their potential dangers. LGVs are seriously policed

But in these cases the spotty oil is looking to the owner for guidance and to learn. However crap it is atleast the CPC offers an external source to learn from. I was very lucky to work with some really decent blokes that taught me an aweful lot and where very straight lace. But most spotty oiks are just used and abused. And some not all but definitely some of this crowd are definitely not worth turning in. There was a gang of muck away firms around here a good few years ago now admittedly that where up to every trick. Including tractors and trailers and breaking every other rule going. And they where really nasty pieces of work. They paid very well but equally they weren't afraid of doing some serious damage to ex employees they felt had wronged them. There are still a few around but the cartel like situation has gone.

Take this back abit, can’t entirely blame the drivers here if the police themselves don’t even know what’s right or wrong!! Non of us here are stupid or ignorant to the facts, but a farm labourer who normally mucks out the cows gets told to go sit in the big tractor and run between these two sites with the big trailer on its t really going to think any different is s/he? Just thinks they are having a good week sat in the comfy tractor with the tunes banging, probably passing multiple police on every trip anyway!

it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that the vehicle is fit for use, at the start of every shift before getting behind the wheel and reporting any/all defects found - end of!
if it's not fit for use it should not be used - end of!
the driver is responsible for all of this and ensuring he carries a load in compliance with the law - end of! ...
if he is missing any equipment to comply, he should not be getting behind the wheel - end of !! ....

WTF shouldn't he be held responsible for not giving a sh1t, regardless of what he's paid ...
he has a responsibility to operate within the law .. End of !!
if he killed one of your loved ones because of his negligent behaviour you'd be the first to hang him out to dry AND his boss with him

Yes he should have every right to refuse but the punishment should be on the operator. It is the only way to actually stop the problems. Currently there are far far to many bullyish companies operating knowing that there slap dash attitude will ultimately be the drivers problem and the the majority of people are not in the position to change jobs at short notice.

And this shows no sign of changing as the companies know they can get away with it.
Certain parts of the industry are worse than others. On top of this atleast an hgv driver has CPC to try and educate them. The tractor driver if a young lad and only ever taught by the boss may well be completely ignorant of any wrong doing.
Business owners son ......;)

Whilst I see your points and do sympathise, there are many reasons why the drivers operate these outfits without any consideration for others, intelligence or lack there of, unwilling to rock the boat and (most often) worried about loosing their job, which for folk like yourself and me is of little consequence because we have done our own thing anyway, so job loss isn't a major threat. But to someone who is dependant on that job and well aware that the boss could gossip about the employee to other local employers, would then struggle to get a job elsewhere because he dobbed the boss in to the DVSA and had the outfit impounded. I know I'm being blunt and to be fair I'm not accusing anyone of doing such but I'm betting it occurs quite a lot. Hence the lack of willingness for the drivers to stand up against what they think is wrong. I know several of my mates drive tractors hauling various loads that may or may not be agricultural and they think it all falls on the boss at the end of the day. It's about time it did.

All these roadside pulls should then mean HMRC pay the business owners a visit and start looking through the books, it'd shake up the industry and kill the job overnight once word got about and they actually got prosecuted. I'm all for MOT's on tractors and trailers too, it'd be a good thing! The number of outfits I work on that are in poor repair is untrue and there's no excuse for lack of money as they can foot the bill no bother for the transmission rebuild because of the brakes failing or the smashed PTO gears because they ran an implement with a knackered bearing. All self inflicted. I agree with others, the drivers aren't the biggest part of the problem in my opinion. It starts higher up, like with most organisations.

This is very true, a lot don't know the rules, drivers and police alike. It's time it was made clear, maybe even as part of driving test theory so everyone knows? One good thing about the HGV theory and CPC it covers quite a lot of topics that a category B person is completely unaware of and frankly it wouldn't be a bad thing if they were. Like I said earlier, I have mates who drive for contractors on work similar to that mentioned and they are blissfully unaware of the regulations and the actual running requirements, hence don't realise they are in the wrong. It's not obvious either unless you take the time to read into it.

Plod doesn't seem to know or bothered round here to be fair. The one they are all scared of is the DVSA and HMRC, who could up the anti and put a sharp stop to this job.

Agreed, what about certain local "biomass"contractors as well? Dragging wossive loads of timber that certainly doesnt look like it's from a forest in fastracs....🤷
