I reckon it's prob gone up a bit now that was couple year ago. I think it was 250 for 8 hr day inc travel with 50 extra for them bringing the breaker. Minimum 8hr hire. The machine was pretty much brand new they run a few of them so it must pay. Lot of council and highways work

If they do a lot of council/highway work it's v little hours on the machine compared to what's charged out and an op on peanuts. Still doesn't make much but seems to be enough.

Lol it was actually easier. He did the first load with the front but was a tight little infill plot and tearing everything up. I'm sure he said something like they're equivilant to an 8 tonner with reach on extra dig?

6t is equivalent. And based on photos looks like front would be faster. I've heard of a few machines locally that will only use back end as they cant or Don't have experience loading lorries with front bucket.

I'll have to defer to your expertise but like I say did the first lorry that way and wasn't too much in it. He got everything done in the day I needed was happy with the 300quids worth. Those wagons were 60 quid a load for that hard-core. They operate from a place not far crush it then re sell it. The backhoe firm own the yard and used to run it but they got too much agro off the caravan enthusiasts taking crap in then making threats if owt was said. Occasionally they used to do free tip for clean hard-core and tenner a load for buying crushed

3 of mine over the years, started on a 580b case then a 580f then Ford 555 but got no pictures.then the case 590sle which was the best machine I ever used, then the Cat which was the biggest pile of shite ever and I’ve documented the appalling treatment I got from finnings on the old ceforum and finally the 590st which was just ok.that went 9 years ago and not had a backhoe since and not had a call for one in all that time either.

Does anyone have sales figures for the UK annual backhoe market (Ross?) Sadly I bet it is not the 2000 units sold about Y2K. That said I still think they are a good all round tool, as can pick & carry a full pallet of blocks up a lane inaccessible to a lorry, are self mobilizing & up to 25mph
The true cost of running a mini digger is the cost of a big 4WD towing vehicle & trailer on top of the machine itself. That said you are only insuring one vehicle for the road risk with the mini set up, & need something on the road for general use. The Midi CX looked interesting but did not sell in the UK (they sold more in the USA) but was slow on road. It re visited an old JCB idea of being able to remove the hoe to free the tractor to run other things (eg a mower). A member here owns a 2Cx & says it is an overlooked little gem, but he only uses it on his own jobs.
Feel something like this or the old MF 40 could work here, as a lot of inaccessible narrow lanes, but has 'Joe Bloggs' builder turned against the concept of hiring one, but happily hires a telehandler to unload one lorry to cart stuff up the same lane ??? Any thoughts? I was the driver partner in a 3c for years but was a while ago.

Ground workers on a site I was on recently tracking ages to pick up pack of blocks in big 360, then tracking back down. Was taking ages. They mustve had 10 or more big machines on this job, dozer, arctic dumpers the lot. You'd think a backhoe would of fitted in nicely for nipping getting the blocks and jobs like that.
There were 2 telehandler on site but these only for the builder and subbies Ground workers sort all their own kit.

Tracking back and forward all day on a 360 would mean he wouldn't have to get off and do anything else though so he'd be more than happy doing it. Death of the 3cx is more about attitude and work ethic than anything else.
Oh and from someone who couldn't wait to get rid of one (despite knowing how useful one still would be) running costs/fixing costs are too high.

The death of the backhoe is entirely due to lack of ability.... both from labour and operator.

A good man on a 3cx will excel and outpace a 13t machine on general duties around a site switching from pallets, bulk loading and trenching...... Trouble is you need a good man..... and most are crap. One of Facebooks top operators managed to pitch a set of buckets over a fence and onto a OAP..... this to me should result in instant dismissal from the craft yet he's still going.

Trouble is not just finding a good op. It's then finding one who wants to be flat out busy all day cos a good man on a backhoe will be kept f'in busy and not many out there who wanna graft

That's true but that can be applied to almost any trade.
