They have been in use for a long time in Germany. Apparently it is near impossible to use traditional tree surgery techniques over there
And i believe ash die back is the reason we are seeing more of them as they say too dangerous to climb. But it doesn't change the shitstorm that's coming when one falls over or boom collapses

you could put the photos of the equipment you mentioned thanks
in my part of the world we still use the freight elevator with the pulley and the rope attached to the beams, not even the hoist they invented in my country by miracle in fire and the wheel, thank you.

I totally agree - there are a couple of firms specialising in tree removal with hiabs and I can’t help but think something will go wrong at some point…
used to get asked to do a bit with my cranes and unless I could get close enough to double up on their estimated weights, it was always an emphatic " NO ... go hire summat twice the size guys " .... they were always wildly out on their estimated weights when you got hold of whatever they were lopping down .... and once you've got it - you'm ****ed - can't put it back down .... Russ does a fair bit and he's the same, if he can't get a min x2 safety he'll cross hire summat in twice or more the size of his 35 tonner .... regularly crosses in a mates 120 tonner to be safe. The consequences of a **** up are dire !!!!

All the grapple saw hiabs as far as I am aware are based out of Surrey as is a lot of this mechanical dismantling kit. Most densely wooded county in England.
They are impressive to watch but you must be bloody confident on your weight guestimates
need to be very liberal too ... no good trying to be close ..... caution or nothing .... on the limit and it'll go South bloody quick ..... once destabilised there is only one way it'll end

Must admit hiabs roto handlers etc being used to take trees down are just an accident waiting to happen and when it does will we see then used for it again.
no question .... it is not what they were designed for ... shock loading is also a big no no when you're reaching like that ... too much momentary stress and it'll fold like a soggy drinking straw .... all lifting equipment is designed to be progressively loaded, until it takes the load off the deck/whatever .... end of !!

I do quite a bit with grapple saws, one mounted on a 85 ton fassi & the other mounted on a merlo. I’ve just spent the whole of Jan & feb cleaning up after the merlo on ash dieback works

quite possibly, but i'll bet a quid to a pinch of pig tish that their gear is all well OTT for anything they tackle ... have seen vid.s of some of their stuff and it is all well over engineered to cope with the stresses potentially involved .... you won't see any gung ho, it'll be fine, operations
.... how long until HSE decide it's too dangerous to send monkeys up trees anymore..
And from what Ive seen and Eddie's commentary it's a grey area that's going to get screwed at some point ...a big prang will hasten it I guess.🤷
only a question of time ..... tree climbers will always have their place, when access is impossible any other way

hardly surprising when you look at how far he was trying to reach with what is effectively a 'pissy little crane' for that sort of job .... probably got a tonne-ish capacity where he was stretched to if that .... long booms are to get height, not silly reach radii

I wouldn't say any of the grapple saw hiab setups are gung ho
They are all professional outfits and the gear is exactly the same. It will be a few years down the line when the kit filters down that problems occur
