After all this effort, I hope you're not going to tell us the main characters are a purple haired social sciences graduate and an art student who wouldn't know a diggers arse from its boom!
I'll offer the same thing I said in the last "zombie" thread we had....your survivors accidentally stumble upon a fully restored Scammell Explorer with full recovery gear...maybe I'm just living out my own fantasy though...in reality, I'd just find a moped, meep meep!
The Scammell explorer wrecker is just about the only fantasy that ever came true for me, someone I used to know in the land rover scene let me take his for a paddle in the Weston Park mud run.
After all of the other vehicles had had to be dragged out the Scammell was still trundling backwards and forwards.
After a while they sent the digger back in to make the run more challenging and the Scammells response was to go through with five wheels in the gloop and one front wheel way up on the bank
Unfortunately the next day attempts to defeat the Explorer didn't really happen as the news of the crash in the tunnel was coming in

If you want some specs, the current British Challenger Tank with a 1200hp V12 engine and 59kmh/37mph top speed will get you 550km/340miles on a tank of fuel.

Are there still Scottish open coal mines a tyre'd dozer with trailer hitched on the back would still get under all the bridges as anything bigger you'd end up wearing the bridge

It's looking like the thing may need to break down by a certain point (probably once they're well into England). What's something simple that might go on a 'dozer after several hours of vehicle smashing? It would need to be something that one of the characters—who has engineering knowledge—might be able to hazard a guess at and think he might possible be able to fix.
Or could it be as simple as overheating and needing to cool down for a bit? Essentially, at a certain point, the 'dozer needs to be taken out of the picture

I'd say the way your characters will be driving it, a holed radiator or a torn coolant or hydraulic pipe is the most likely breakdown!

Given your average D8 dozer has a top speed of 11.3 km/h or 7.0 mph, the most likely and mundane breakdown will be running out of fuel at around 100km or 63 miles if your tank was full.
Or given the amount of electronics and computerised systems in earthmoving machinery, it could throw a code and leave you in limp mode going at only 3-4km/h

This is excellent, thank you. If someone thought they could jerry rig a fix for this, would this need to be specialist equipment to repair or would some duct tape and a trip to Halfords do it?

Based on all your (extremely helpful) comments about being likely to find certain types of equipment etc its looking like a skidder is the best option in terms of power (shifting cars quickly), speed, and manoeuvreability. The dozers sound great but perhaps too slow. Can anyone please recommend a skidder that can get the job done and also really shift?
