Certainly fewer than we currently have Graham!
In my opinion there is no reason for a farmer to have to spend a load of money buying a new trailer or otherwise getting new tyres/lights etc fitted to something that might get dragged out of the hedge to do 2 miles down a country lane once every 10 years. That tractor is well on top of the job - it would drag that load to the moon and back with no wheels/tyres! If a motorist couldn’t anticipate what that setup is doing at 20 (or maybe 30) mph then they probably shouldn’t be on the road themselves.
What about your missus when she's walking down the road and that right dropside finally finishes fatiguing off with all the wobbling? Come on mate, the hazard is obvious. That trailer should have been in the scrap bin ten years ago. He should have stuck the mesh in the back of the farm pickup and done the job quicker, cheaper and with more comfort.

It would have been easier and safer to hang the mesh off the muck grab even.

This...all well and good using something like that on a farm off road ...big difference when you factor in the rammed full roads we have these days...do what you want on your property
.but....that accident with the mum and pushchair and the scrap wagon must be fresh in our minds . At the end of the day we've all got a duty of care to ensure someone's wife and kids don't get totalled. Not giving a ff doesn't cut it anymore with me. Sorry grumpy bad weather Monday rant
Another Situation here in town with basically 2 non mway bridges over the river . Tractors obvs can't use mway so all trundle smack through middle of town all times of day. Absolute pita if you get one at rush hour as basically takes two lanes up
Would be a darn sight safer giving them some some exemption to use mway for one junction but pigs might fly. Most are now 150k fendts that will do 50mph and massive rakes and balers and Big Ms etc.

Curveball if your going to be spesific - reinforcement mesh isn’t a farming activity , it’s construction…. So I’d expect that tractor is on white 😂
That would depend on if the mesh is being utilised to "construct" a new area of concrete or to "repair" an existing area.... The latter being a fully allowable agricultural activity.

The red Diesel change muddied this evening further as there is now an argument that the construction of items required for Agricultural activities (such as concrete bases for water troughs) are exempt....

IMHO all road regs need scrapping and sorting properly for the modern era. There are too many bygone and stupid gaps in some things and too much nonsense in others.

Somewhere I've got a picture of a big tanker full of slurry that lost its wheel at busy junction up the road. Narrow road chock full of kids at school time ...luckily it landed on a low wall so it didn't roll...his extremely lucky day.

I have a similar photo from the AWPR..... Tanker with wheel off.... And another of a jacknifed tractor and artic trailer loaded with probably 30T of mesh.

Kingskerswell bypass had similar, a Tractor lost its trailer when the hitch failed... Amongst other incidents.

All construction jobs.

Couple months ago I was down in @Storrsy land. Sat at a junction and watched as the axle detached itself on this tandem cattle box. Luckily he was slowing down to turn, might have been a lot nastier at full chat.
Driver must have crapped himself as he had just passed a couple of cyclists and it must have felt like he has pulled them under the wagon.
I have the video form my dashcam somewhere

That's another topic that bears investigation...all major road projects up here run tracs and low loaders/bowsers etc love to see the paperwork.

I know of one lad who was asked to move a 21t kommie ....told to wind his neck in and move it as it was late in the day and no one else could do it

Farmers should no more have exemptions for dangerous practices than Sikhs should be allowed to carry breadknives in public. When I worked on the land my boss wouldn’t let anything out of the yard without working brakes, lights and good tyres.

They use them within the roadworks though?

Devil’s advocate here - what actual hazard does the pictured setup pose to anybody? How can the mesh fall out? How is the rusty old trailer with some/no lights going to cause an issue? What would happen if the old perished bald tyres failed?

Trailer goes over a pothole or two along the 2 mile lane at 40k, mesh bounces/springs out and drops onto the road 😬

Issue is the roadworks can extend to literally miles on a bypass project.

Ruling is 1km load carrying... On red diesel...... Notice the issue. So we now there is actually no legal issue with taking a works truck on white diesel any distance.....
This...

And a little story.
They had booked in a full weekend of works...closures etc on big pipeline job...
Pissed off a good mate off mine trashing land around his .i then they suddenly they come on a Friday night.. knowing his yard is up the road ....would you have any fuel we've no off road bowser booked ....let's just say he made some coin 🤐 out of certain large green contractor with a Irish sounding name 🙃

Site down the road from me for six new houses has just opened up and as I went past yesterday saw them using what looked like a brand new fast track and tipper trailer for the muck away. How can this possibly be cost effective compared to tippers? Unless the farmer is losing all the spoil on his land at no cost to him I guess.
