Maybe so, but if the job requires several lorry loads of material, the cost soon mounts up and people dont want to pay the extra.
There is such a thing as good quality crushed, it’s just knowing where to get it and who you can trust. Sadly those kind of places are few and far between, and also pushing their prices up accordingly.

Well in actual fact the stuff that Richard used was the 'good quality crushed' from A & S.
He has wacked it to death and it will be covered by dry lean so it will end up a good job
If you look at the photo with the Dig Rent grab lorry on Phase 1.......
....... none of the blocks have moved at all with 32T driving on it
Snot my job and I use the full Monty Type 1 if taking the lead
I remember a job I did for a Landscaper at Peldon a few years ago -
"Can you tidy up my yard? We put down some crushed and some lorry have driven over it"
Well it was like pea soup. There was a bund around it preventing drainage.
It had just stirred it all up to mud

Just paid 7.50 for 2 loads planings but they a bugger to get hold of atm round here, need some more.

I do love the Type 1/Recycled/what is crap debate.

IMHO I favour recycled. Binds better than limestone and simply put is the right money. If your around london ARB (As Raised Ballast) Is the stuff for road sub base if you can get it. It has clay content which acts as the binder and by f**k it will go down hard.

There is a firm down here that sells "eco blend" which i'm sure is crush, soil and tarmac.... Goes down very well, but not my fav.

Purely down to 'you only get out what you put in' a lot of places crushing will be getting a lot in from local builders landcapers etc and will have soil and all kinds in. Difficult balance to get but real clean conc makes crap hardcore when crushed as it won't bind. Need the right mix of stuff to crush to get real good stuff. As rory says bit of dirt in there helps binding. No hardcore goes down well dry need a bit of moisture for compaction. I'll still only use crush for bulk fill and top it with mot but that's mainly to avoid punctures tbh. A lot of outfits won't crush small enough either hence i only use my own (gets rid of rubble problem as well)

Day aggregates sell two types of type 1 recycled ecoblend
White - limestone, recycled and I think clay
Black - limestone, recycled and plannings

There stuff is really good the white for sub base and the black can make a decent surface
It even smells clean unlike some stuff turns up smelling like a skip yard

Anyway, it still worried me, as it looked too fine and I was worried it would turn to shite. But it went down incredibly well.
The whole job got capped with Type1 Granite,I can’t remember how many loads it was now, over 100, and at our local prices it came to a tidy sum! Hence why the client was keen for me to get up to a sensible level with recycled material before we capped it with granite. I did reject a few loads, but on the whole the recycled went down well.

So day 3 with Richard with loads of "can you just......" coming at me thick and fast

Remember that bank that he wanted battered back?
Well when he measured it off the building had to shave another foot or so off
This was so he could get the concrete posts and gravel bars in.
Nailed it without too much mess with my nice little 9" bucket

The he said, "can you just dig out the old soakaway ready for crates?" @JD450A - free pack of plastercine in every packet

"It's now too effing deep" R - Ok "chuck some hardcore back n then"
"can you just lower me down on yer bucket "
Then he fannies around getting the pea level with a bubble

Happy days - showed Richard how to lower a nicely wrapped block of crates into the hole with the big red hook.

Mixed bag this week, having to turn down at least 2 offers of work
Our oldest daughter, Laura, is moving house and guess who is roped in with borrowing a van and shifting stuff
To get ahead of the game, we have now moved most of her stuff into our Machine Mart temporary garage.
Manage to fit in a quick hedge removable ready for fencing for a neighbour.

I hate Laurel hedges!

The past week has been a mixed bag.
Richard and Tony finished the nice fence that I cleared for him

The customer, our neighbours, decided to obtain the material from a local supplier.
The posts were too long and intended for panels at the middle height!
They cut about a foot off each one to make it look right

Our daughter has moved house, so being a single parent, dad (That's me), not only did the move but hassling stuff for her.
Bed and wardrobe assembly, washing machine installation, meter readings, extra sockets, TV brackets etc etc.

My mate Steve, helped me do much of the assembly stuff.
Natasha loves the new wardrobe, " I can see myself when I come home from school. And when I'm laying in bed, I can see mummy coming up the stairs"

Finished the day with a nice burn up.

This pandemic lockdown is tough for us all. Sharon has been a pillar of strength and every day she does something positive
This past week or so, she has put up most of the Christmas decorations....

So I got cracking yesterday on a dead willow tree. Died about 2-3 years ago, buggered if I know why

The cherry picker lifts to 45' and I was maxed out on both stage 1 and 2 rams.
"I can see over all the houses from up here"

Got most of it down by lunchtime.
Trunk done after lunch.

Then we finished the day with a nice fire

We only burnt the brush wood up to about the thickness of yer arm.
Have been processing the cut and split logs and storing like you do - in 1T baggies

Pulled me out with no drama

Friend of mine over near Clacton runs a CCTV and Alarm company. Have done a few jobs for him with trenches for SWA and cables etc. He has a field full of horses. "Dave, can you just scrap of the mud and an access road in with hardcore and road plannings."

Shed on site bit like @TiltyShaun but full of horse feed and stuff

So have worked out that we need to pull out all the mud, geotextile, crushed and then road plannings to make anything of it.
He'll be looking to run his 7.5T Iveco horse box in and out once events start up again

Fortunately he has a contact locally that can supply the stuff, but gonna need about 135T to start with.....

Another mixed bag week with 3 days of serious site clearance digger work in Colchester for my brother Graham
He bought an 'investment' bungalow with a subsidence issue going on 2 years ago.
Not serious but was being caused by 4 big fcuk off oak tree which had a TPO on them
Fast forward to now the trees have been removed after the LA dragged their feet in removing the order.
And I have been called in to clear the detritus in the fairly large garden.....

600 is sat on the stump of the removed Oak - about 4 feet diameter - twas big and overhanging the back of the building

Climbed down into the old ditch which border some waste ground...

Cleared the crap and done the best with the 'made up' ground to restore the ditch....

Working towards the serious overgrown crap and remains of fences etc....

So we could get a decent fence in. Ground slopes 2 ways

Quick scrape up and top soil strip.....

Usual bonfire at the end of the day for the brash raked up.....

Not an easy site to sort out.....

Back with tracked in finish....

Then covered with crappy on site top soils.
Graham is so tight that he wouldn't buy in the nice screened stuff for me to work with

One for the boys - Graham likes his boys toys and has an old Roughneck for moving stuff.

So Graham is now procrastinating what to do about the subsidence issue, which to my mind is only minor.
Now the 4 x Oak trees have gone the clay subsoil should heave back and repairs can be done to the wall......

The cracks are about 10 - 15 mm and we will watch to see if they move back during the wet winter.
The soils around the old oak tree stumps was bone dry
