Busy few weeks.......

Shifting and wacking crushed with Ryan.....

Repairing the land drain that I dug up when doing the SWA into a new build barn.....

Third phase of a big driveway dig out with my mate Richard....

How I hate gas mains. Can you just take the top off? I know it runs through here somewhere.....

Then Mark rocked up with a load of ballast in his new (2 weeks) DAF lorry. Nice lorry which will carry 10.5 tonnes......
......BUT no Air Con

We hired in a Wacker from Target - this first one would not go forward (it was just creeping along)....

Quick phone call and 15mins later they dropped this one off. The dogs bollocks - loved it. It even had two speed forward and reverse

got the right grab for the job ... proper loader , rather than a digging grab ... wide spread and scrapes it all up nicely, 'fore closing under the pile

Yes Robert was telling us that when A & S got their new lorry 2 years ago he came over from Silverton's where he had been for 15 years.
He loves that lorry and how it's set up. He keeps it very nice and is skilled and relaxed.
We had some good banter after he'd loaded about the usual bollocks

A & S have gone from strength to strength around the Colchester area is recent years.
The main thing for me is the 'can do' mentality which equates to excellent customer service.
Have helped me out loads of times in recent years.
Sometimes rock up to their yard for the odd 2 tonne load
Or a quick phone call can usually get you a lorry load delivered the same day
Run by the son of a 'semi-retired' local haulier and he doesn't miss a trick

......the banks of 24v batteries have all sulphated up so I decided to change them. But we had to do some refurb stuff on the carrier first.....

.....got a right result on FB Market place with a pair of 100Ah about 1 year old for only £100 locally
Offcut of Ifor Gorilla Board bolted in with M6 ck ss - jobs a good un!

Tested them by pruning dead branches out of a Silver Birch whiles waiting for Sharon to serve up dinner on Saturday - all good

We used to have one of those cherry pickers batteries were always a nightmare, I wanted to stick a Honda on it to drive pump but ended up selling it in end, even if left on trickle charger they didn’t like it.

Hi Giles - yep the 'new' batteries are holding up very well at the moment. The Ying Tong charger is superb.
Now one of the tyres has a puncture and the wanky old spare is fitted. Will see my brother next week and fix it
Time will tell......will be using it this late summer/autumn to give our assorted trees a serious haircut

Been a while since I posted on my blog. Been sooooo busy......
Here's snap shot of last week when Ryan was with me during the Half Term Holidays
Monday to Wednesday we rocked up at Manningtree High School for a fence removal job.
Had estimated for 5 days but worked as a team we nailed it in only 3 days

Typical old post and rail fence around stuff on the sports field. Serving no purpose really.
Most of the posts were rotten and knocked over.....

.....and Neuson pulled 'em apart

Teamwork

Some would not break off and the concrete popped out. So here's Ryan breaking the concrete back into the hole before 'making good'..

Then some pulled out easily whilst others wanted to bring up the paving. Mr Stihl had to deal with one at the entrance to the Music Block

Ryan now had the 'making good' skill added to his competencies

Last knockings. There was hundreds of the buggers to deal with

At the end of each day we had a whole Ifor full of wood to sort out.
Rot on the bonfire. Crap for the log burner. But at least 50% will 'go again' on my vast estate

Feed back from the job was superb -
"I am thrilled with the works carried out. The Trust will also be pleased that it is cheaper than anticipated.
I will approve the invoice and send to Head Office for processing straight away.
Very many thanks to you and Ryan for your hard work.

They was impressed that we kept it clean and tidy. We was blessed with good weather and free teas and coffees from the staff room

I'm all for helping out... but if you quoted 5 days and did it in 3 should you of just invoiced them for the total amount as they were more than happy to pay that?

If it had taken 7 days (overrun by 2 days ), would they have raised you another purchase order?

depends on whether Dave actually quoted or provided a reasonable estimate for the work

Used to do the same ... a customer could either go with my experienced estimate or I could quote for the work (and cover my ar*e) .... if we 'scored' on a quote it was their loss ... most folks who got to know us, were usually happy with a reasonable estimate and were confident they'd not get 'ripped off' if it were to exceed it

Well with loads of experience in this plant malarky I never give a QUOTE unless it's a priced job.
Always give ESTIMATES 'cos until you 'break ground' (my usual work) then you don't know what you're dealing with
Usually have to explain this in careful detail to domestic customers with a caveat on the estimate.
Most of my work is with 'Trades' who know the score
On 'day rate' I always explain that "It's the snags that take the time"
On this particular school job, it was 3 easy days TBH, we dealt effectively with all the snags.
And I had said all along if it takes less time then they will be invoiced accordingly.
The goodwill means that they will have us back on other jobs

Yep Ryan has been my 'apprentice' on and off for the past 2 years whilst he has been at 6th Form.
Now he really needs to decide what he wants to do.
Think that he's be OK with CSCS and Site Work to start with BUT he ain't got a driving licence yet

So with the savings on time this last week and Ryan available to get stuck in I bought forward another nice little job.
SWA in a trench for a 'sparky' business friend at his customers home to supply his new Shepherd Hut

Shepherds Hut- came as a kit of parts and a nice 'work in progress'....

I dug it and Ryan followed on - cable in t' trench, spades depth of cover then some nice marker tape

Ryan getting stuck in, "I might run out of energy by the end of the day!"
Me, "No you won't 'cos Neuson will be finishing off while you tidy up and have a sleep in the truck!"

So to keep my apprentices motivation going, I gave a few lessons.
He soon mastered the twin joystick thing to get those rams dancing to a nice 'duty cycle'
"Righto that's enough, you're too slow, gotta get this job done today"

So Ryan had tidied up while I finished off. Subsoiled tracked into the trench and then covered slightly proud with top.
Customer happy with the rough finish, which will all blend in within a few months

That's it another job jobbed

Doing better than a lot of utilities - they often use the cable to hold the marker down.

.....running with no smoke! Rams are all good. It needs a new seat!

Personally, I think that it's horrible

Anyway yesterday after I bent his ear again. he's decided to sell it on Facebook Market Place
