Ripper

Got a few tree roots to grub up (about 8 acres) of self seeded trees that have been left for at least 20 years so thought I’d knock up a ripper this afternoon got some 10” pipe of a job

And a lump of 1” plate to make the hanger

Drew out the shape I had in my head and cut all the curves

Then joined up the curves with straight cuts to complete the hangers then stuck them together

Next job make the ripper, found a 40mm plate that was going spare and drew a Tyne shape on it

Then burned it out free hand, bit rough but got the shape I was after

Maybe a bit long at 39”
but will be easier to whip a foot off the bottom than stick a bit on

Well had a rethink already going to make the Tyne with a wider profile ie. more metal at the back so I can create some ‘rip saw teeth’ in the back bit like this

Well had a rethink already going to make the Tyne with a wider profile ie. more metal at the back so I can create some ‘rip saw teeth’ in the back bit like this

Having a bit more ‘body’ at the back (serrated or not) would also give a better fulcrum to lever against when crowding. Maybe think about chamfering a bit of an edge on the pulling side if it is primarily for roots too.

I don't know how to share the photo from instagram but this friend of mine had one built for his Spider excavator and its serrated on the leading edge, he said it works like a charm.

No such thing as od shape off cuts they allways make a gusset for something tidy work have you enoght plate for me to make one

Know what you mean .... but always easier trying to nest into a rectangular lump than a weird shape

20mm is always handy I’ll have come down for a nosey what else you’ve got

Well it works a treat the biggest one so far was a oak tree stump with a diameter of at least 18” just went full depth of the ripper on 4 sides of the stump as close as the head would allow, just pop it out of the ground then using the teeth on the back cut the small roots and soil off to back fill the hole
This was the first of many

Now on to phase #2
A land rake to pull all the roots into a pile and ripp a few of the smaller ones out
Made a start got a few FLT tines out of my pile of scrap (ones that I’ve bent) cut into 20” lengths

Got 9 of them, so got a 8’ length of 10” pipe and cut square holes in both sides so the tines slot right through and welded them in

Just need to weld the head on and finish welding the tines in
Then I can give them roots some hell

Looks like they're at least making the sacrifice to a good cause ..... them tree roots must love seeing you arrive on site
bet the local bird life must be loving you turning that lot over for 'em
