A decent cordless skil saw is not cheaper than a decent cordless chainsaw. The Makita 36v circular saw is £250 ish bare, the 36v chainsaw only £140 IIRC.

Mind you, the circular saw is awesome and I think I'll treat myself to the chainsaw.

The 36v ones depending on blade size can be as low as 150 or just under 100 for an 18v one

The top handle chainsaw is 150 but the proper rear handled ones are near 200
And I'm not even sure you can get the top handle ones legitimately without a climbing ticket certainly the case with the Stihl and husqvarna top handles

Makita 36v from what I've seen is £200-260 without batteries. It looks like you can get a cordless stihl with battery and charger for the same.

Buy this - for your fencing use it will be more than adequate and it’s less than £150 bare.

MS180 I suppose. I bought one of those years ago as it was really cheap and we ran it until it died (it turned out be much better than expected!), but don’t know much about the smaller modern kit to be honest.
I do know that it was as good as the top-spec Stihl 6 months ago (someone had one on site when our Makita was brand new and the Stihl was certainly no better). There may be an upgraded battery Stihl now but I have no interest - the Makita is great! Get one, I reckon you’ll love it! (get the smallest bar, powerheads are all the same).

depends on how much you use it. I carry the dewalt battery saw in the van for the occasional indian chippy work or tree dropping. It works of my existing tool batteries so was cheap bare unit. As its 54v it has plenty of go. Wouldnt be any good for using all day long though unless you had a 3 or 4 batteries and a charger.

Interesting, we've got the DeWalt 54v 9in cutoff saw and compressor. Pretty darn good for cordless. Notice milwauke just launched 12"👌. My dad's got the Stihl cordless stuff, needs big battery and not cheap but is Ruddy good.

I couldn't hire one so I bought a cordless Stihl. It's nice and light and is perfect for fencing. It's so handy that it's always ready to go unlike petrol and you don't need ear defenders.
They had a stihl 9 inch grinder that takes the same battery, I've not seen one before(y)

Should have gone makita, at least you could have bought more builders tools that use the same battery! And used cheap knockoff batteries.

I needed it on the day and nowhere local had the Makita. The Stihl came with one battery and charger for £230 where as the Makita would be order in for £260 with no batteries. I don't like buying tools of the internet if I can help it because it's a pita if they break. Hit a screw with it today so it's not cutting so nicely now:rolleyes:

Any Stihl dealer has to work on any warranty repairs, no matter where the machine was bought from. Not sure about Makita, but the one time I've needed it their service was UNBELIEVABLE. Impact wrench collected from my house and delivered with new motor the next day. I've still no idea how they managed it without a time machine.

The makita should be £150+VAT (£180) with no batteries. Start buying online- you're robbing yourself if you don't, especially stuck on that poxy island 😂😂

As for the chain- Rotatech chains from Northern Arb Supplies. Will be under a fiver for that size bar, and they are genuinely decent chains, I use them up to 36". Start buying online!

Always buy power tools online I understand why the local places can't match the price but hey ho. I'll probably moan in 20 years when there's no shops but especially with mass produced things like tools online is the way for me.

A chainsaw for vexing I use my little stihl 170 to cut up the old crap for fire but dont think I'd be meat enough for best work. I use the circ saw

Never bought a new chain had it sharpened by a bloke local what's the score do they come sized for your bar are they easy to replace,
