It wouldn’t lift two of us earlier, neither of us are massive. Payload is 200kg but it didn’t want to know with probably 180kg on.

I’ve shied away from mewp work for years as it’s often fiddly builder type stuff. But I’m coming round to the idea that it’s still me and a machine therefore £500 plus vat per day, more if you quote right.

I’ll see. If I own it the pressure is off and it can sit there till the job is done.

We will see. It was the cheapest I’ve seen one and I got it for 8.5k plus vat. I have a lot of gutter refits etc coming up at a listed building conversion into flats that I do a lot of maintenance for. Plus some dead ash, awkward hedges and the like. I’ve also work to do on my folks place and mine when I get time. I reckon it will be like the alpine tractor which was similar money and made it back quickly. Will be very handy to leave it set up and do the job at leisure.

It’s the first machine I’ve had where my life is on the line in it though, so I’m keen to get it thoroughly examined and a loler on it! Hours are just shy of 300- apparently it was kept in reserve at a substation much of its life and I’m the third owner. Allseems tight and most of the paint is still on the sprockets but I’ve no experience of these.

Yeah, I don’t like the single tie down point each side in the centre. But then I also didn’t like putting a strap over each end of the jib!

Strap over the top of the job definitely comes loose. On the the spiderjacks they have a tube through the boom to put a strap but it's still a single strap over the machine and still comes loose. Could do with a digger dock trailer really

If quote rate I aim to make closer to a grand, but a lot of my work is man and machine day rate at £500 a day. Nothing really burns more than 20l of diesel a day and it’s all five to ten miles from home.

I’ll worry about increasing rates after this mother of a recession has been and gone There’s plenty still going out for less and it’ll get worse.

First job for that mewp is some roadside dead ash as part of a woodland clearance job. Should take three days and be 5k less maybe £500 in costs. That’s a jam job, but as my old boss used to say, you can’t neglect bread and butter work.

The other end of the spectrum but what about diamond core drilling like the ones they did that bank job with? You could spam the local stove installers but I can't think who else, maybe plumbers?

Plumbers won't pay other trades to do a job, trust me.. I am a plumber! Sooner buy the kit myself than try and organise someone to turn up on day 2 of a 3 day project to core a hole. If they don't turn up thr whole jobs fooked.. better to do yourself.

They carry a laptop at about a grand a total station which can be had for under £8000 with all the accessories and a gps kit which can be had for under 4grand. Would need a couple of grand a year for rtk and cad subscriptions and I would think some pretty expensive insurance.

Do people charge out for CAT and Genny? We have ours just to try and avoid making BooBoos.. Occasionally we use it to trace difficult oil lines.. and also water lines with the tracing reel, but never thought about charging out for it.
