I can understand that a young farming lad is chuffed to be driving a tractor that has a lorry engine in it and can tow an 18 ton excavator at 37 mph through the village 30 limit, if I was his age I too would be on the phone telling my mates all about it
What I really can't understand is why it seems to be a point of pride not to couple the air brakes up

At least the 50 tonne plus club drive sensibly and couple up the air lines

I believe they call it 'diversification'.

diversification is fine ...... if they play by the rules .. zero road fund, rebated fuel, no tickets, no O license, no LGV license, tacho, mileage limitations, etc., etc. and using their exemptions as ag. users is not - end of .... trailer has obviously been purposely adapted for muck away and bet it is waaaay over the limit every trip

Was thinking it be interesting to do a chart of side by side costs including purchase costs and taxes etc. Any one done it? @JD450A I dont understand all the truck ones enough..but I bet it be stark

but he can't the load and trailer is limited to 18t ...... on the phone is illegal - end of ... and a lorry can not move until his brakes are coupled .. tractors should be the same - locked on - deadman, 'til pressurised off

Lorry trailers can be moved without coupling Suzie's.
What should be done as a safety feature in general is remove the plastic stopper inside the red Suzie's quick coupler.
This means breaks apply as soon as the line is disconnected and you can't forget to put the handbreak on and let the trailer roll of.
Providing air is in the tank you can still press the shunt button to move it but atleast it won't role off if you forget to pull the handbrake.
There isn't really ever going to be a solution to stop people being idiots.
What I can say from experience and speaking to alot of other people that have driven tractors for years and then done there hgv is that once you drive a lorry, tractors feel so unsafe on the road by comparison

Modern ag trailers have brake actuators that can be hydraulically actuated or two line air with ABS . Sticker on the front warning that a lower speed limit applies when running hydraulic

Here here. Not anti farming...far from it...British farming needs to be strengthened. It's the chancers using farming as an excuse to undercut...thing is often it's with mega exspensive over the top kit...I mean the days of Colin and his David brown with 4t trailer helping us clear hardcore are now replaced with £150k+ of kit
Next 6 months will be interesting.

driver would need to be literate for that to work ... lot of 17 yr olds struggle to string a sentence together

To be fair it makes no difference what system is used to operate the brakes all the that matters is the size of the liners
I have driven 15t airbreaked trailers with 3.5in liners and they are awefull
Likewise I have driven 20+ tonne dolly trailers with hyd breaks on 9.5in liners which stopped great
But a lorry stops better

Yes, if they want less cars on the road then a return to the old days of 250cc for learners would be a good start.
