do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
But I think someone older would take more caution than someone younger regardless of experience
And it depends on the wagon I find ivecos actually stop very well where as daf don't slow as well
And whilst the downshift may not be smooth but everything I've driven will go into gear if you force it only exception being the range won't flick down if you aren't slow enough
Regardless I was always taught that brakes are for stopping and engine breaking is for allowing down in most circumstances
It amazes me how following people in both cars and lorry's the constant glare of the break lights when there is no need
slightly amusing tale .... used to know two guys who ran half a dozen cranes -- partners -- and starting out they ran some old gear ...
anyway .. Bri, the one guy was mad as a rat -- Les wasn't a lot better, but had a few years on Bri ....
Brian in an old Coles 30/33 8, legger crawled over the rise at High Cross on the M4, outside Newport one afternoon, heading home towards Malpas Tunnels .... a long steady down hill to his exit two miles away .....

and knocked it into Spanish overdrive ...:oops:o_O

the 30/33 were a lump and good for maybe 35mph with a tail wind .... Bri got up to 45mph and realised the traffic ahead weren't moving much ... and at that speed his brakes were ......... complete s**t and doing now't ...........
God knows how, but he managed to stuff it back into top... but he did ...... and stupidly just dropped the clutch ......:oops::eek::cry: which span the engine and box, in the chassis, before snapping the prop and creating an unholy groove in the M4 ....... before wrapping/folding itself under axle 3 ..... quickly followed by 180 gallons of hydraulic, out o' the pulverised oil tank .. and crise knows what else o_O:ROFLMAO:....... he made a ****ing mess and shut the M4 for several hours ....... the 30/33 was a write off

.... but there was no wear on the clutch!!
probably the only thing that wasn't f**ked ..... before excavating the M4, the prop had flailed about in some order, initially with a big ol' leyland engine and gear box attached to it ..... now a Coles 30/33 chassis is two RSJs about 2 ft deep, the full length of the crane ....... but you can imagine the carnage ....... Bri was lucky the engine was behind the cab .... in a Grove 30 tonner it's beside your shoulder / elbow, half way into the cab with a fibre glass cover o_O  ... pretty sure he'd have died in a Grove

most 'bus fleets' are singles with the odd 'decker' chucked in..... dare say with social distancing, etc. 'deckers' are getting used a hell of a lot more ATM ..... very easy to 'forget' you'm in one ..... we used to service the Abergavenny and Brecon fleets, for Red & White ... 14 singles and two 'deckers' ... very easy to 'forget' ... the 'cabs' were all much of a muchness - clonker boxes and 95% laid out the same
My brother worked for Red & White for years as a fitter ... Monmouth depot, August bank holiday Monday maaaaany years ago ... came out the depot on a road test .. looked left up the main st ... ram packed, swung right two hundred yards later he's 10 ft through Monnow Arch, when the sound of breaking glass and crunching reminded him he was in a decker .... only one of the 21 on fleet at that depot ...... easy done  ....... and he wasn't the first to try getting through the arch ..... was a routine through route for singles

not the one with my Bro in it ... he'd worked on 'em and driven 'em for years ...... there was another one a few months later which could've been the one you refer to ...

When my stacker s**t itself other month after running out of fuel tried to bump start it with my van. About f***ed the van dropped clutch in 1st gear in forklift at about 15mph in reality that's probably 3rd gear top speed in that machine what an idiot was like dropping anchor out back of my poor fiat scudo

I was sitting in the polo pissing myself laughing watching my van bugger off with no bumper, I didn't think it was that rotten
