Anything over 3.5t plus a 750kg trailer falls under bigger rules unless you qualify for exemptions. Own goods with a trailer under 1020kg? Not for hire and reward and within certain radius (100k) etc etc. o-licence and tacho/driver rules / licence rules / vehicle towing limits all come into play .I've still got it in my head you can't drive over 3.5t without an operators license unless it's a special purpose vehicle, like 4x4 pickup or something. Am I wrong with this

Yes at under 1029kg it's small trailer exemption so no o license as long as it's not for hire or reward, also correct for the no tacho part.
You can in both cases collect plant for use on your job as long as driving the vehicle isn't your only job, so you collect the machine and drop to site and use the machine for your work

My little hiab trailer weighs more than that the 1029kg. I tow it round behind my dual purpose extended cab pickup which weighs less than 2040kg from factory?? So technically I’m okay (I think) as that’s another exemption .

In that example you are exempt for operators licience as it is your own goods.
I think you would still need a tacho.
Different rules for different reasons. Confused? I think that is easily done when you look at the rules.

I’m transporting oil tanks that we supply and install so that’s own goods. If I’m doing a pick and lift for someone then I’m breaking the rules

There's about half a dozen folk i trust but it's not very often tbh. By the time you work out the time lost on your own job it's barely worth the hassle. It often ties into jobs I'm doing and saves my doing scratty bits mind so not all bad.
